Ilmor V10
 

Getting our ducks in a row to start boat shopping again soon and like the 380 Eagle that Performance boat Center has but a little leary about the Ilmor V10's.
I have heard really good things about them but my concerns since it sounds like Ilmor is no longer making them, what kind of hours can you expect to get out of them before having them gone through?
Are there any Ilmor dealers in southeast around GA anywhere that you could get parts for them or service done on them, etc.?

Any other advice or experiences would be appreciated. Trying to educate myself on these first.

Ilmor doesn't make then anymore but they still fully service them. I recently had Ilmors fully rebuilt by Ilmor, one of them just before last season. They were 2007s and I had some water reversion damage due to leaky headers. I had bought them used in 2010 and ran them in my Fountain then my Donzi and have no idea how many hours they had on them, but many people get 500 - 600 hours of them before the need to be rebuild. There isn't really that much you can do to them to service them other than change the oil regularly and the plugs once in a blue moon. But you can get any parts you need directly from Ilmor. If you need a full rebuild you send them back to Ilmor.

The only downside to the ilmors is that once you've gotten to the 700's/725s there's nothing you can do to upgrade them for more power.

So that boat is a 2006. From my experience if you buy any motors that old I"d make part of the deal pulling the headers and leak testing them. May sound like a pain in the ass but that couple of hundred bucks that it cost to ensure they haven't been leaking can save your ass.

Thanks for the info! I just want reliable power and prefer to stay away from blowers due to shorter maintenance interval routines with them. I'm assuming their parts are a little more expensive since there aren't as many of them compared to merc motors?

Personally I would go merc power. Nothing against Ilmor.

If you need parts you have call Ilmor. Call Ilmor up and ask what a basic refresh will cost. Any decent marine parts store will have the common merc parts in stock or can get them in a day or 2.

Leak testing ten year old headers may only prove that they are not leaking yet. Might be a better idea to budget for new ones as they are the quickest way to destroy an otherwise healty engine,

I"m not sure what parts you are referring to. I had the first gen Ilmors and and currently have a set of 710s. The only parts I've ever bought for them are plugs, impellers, a couple of air filers and oil filters.

When it's time to do the top ends on them I would just send them back to Ilmor and for not much more you could then have Ilmor upgrade your 625's to 710's.

ILmor dealer base is Mastercraft boat dealers for the GM v8 side - the V10 ILmor side of the coin there really never was a full dealer that had a big stocking inventory. I do not even think there is 150 - V10's out in the marine side market place. Ilmor does / did --- make a very good engine as I am NOT knocking them but putting forth what I know.

If I had to guess to how many V10's out in the marine world would be 60 to 100 MAX just a guess on my part and IMO prob pretty close.

A formula Boat dealership might be your best bet for a ILmor contact Maybe. In my area the Formula Dealer would not even know what an marine ILmor V 10 is.

I actually work on a couple of them but has never been more that 3 or 4 per year. .

A lot of very tight fits with them installed as well - front room is very tight for the ones I work on.
