Exactly this.

They get a lot of crap here at times for not being the most powerful thing under the sun but that are fantastic IMO. I would have another set in a heart beat.

My only issue with them is for being "smart" they are not that smart.
Start having sensor/electrical issues and there is a fair chance you will be chasing your tail and wallet around in circles.
Plug in and get more specifics of the the symptom, but it's up to you to figure out the dozen possible causes of the disease.

There are plenty of stories of chasing something down for an entire season...

It happened to us for about a half of season. It was a pain yes but it was cheap to fix once the problem was found.

Why not?

Merc states in the owners manual to not run past 3/4 throttle for extended periods. FWIW... I love mine. It's been a extremely reliable engine since bought in 14'. I've had to replace one IAC valve in that time. Maintenance is key to these. I also recommend owning a scan tool and knowing how to use and understand it.

since we're on the 496, who can tell me what manuals i need, 3 in all
1 for the mechanical
1 for the diagnostics / what the codes mean, and

Is a 320 hp 6.2 any good? Is that a closed cooling engine?

3/4 throttle is approximately 3900-4000. I ran mine at 4000 forever, ran like a top.

Lots of great answers for you here. (Even the slightly sarcastic post...? is getting a good response :))

6.2 is also a great engine, like most standard Merc engines, service them well and they'll be good for a long time. 6.2 is a small block and considerably less power. What boat are you looking at now? Don't think they built a Sunsation 288 with a small block. The bigger 32' was built with twin 6.2's.

Can be raw water or fresh water cooled, just look for the cylindrical header tank on the front of the engine.

Enjoy shopping.
