Default SilverHook crushed Apache Star's record Cuba Run!

Boating from the Keys to Cuba in world record time? - Sun Sentinel

A powerboat race team appears to have broken a time record for crossing from the Florida Keys to Cuba.

Throttleman Nigel Hook of San Diego, and driver Jay Johnson of Scottsdale, Arizona, piloted the 48-foot SilverHook on Thursday just over 103 miles from Key West to a point off the El Morro castle in Havana in 1 hour, 18 minutes and 3 seconds.

The boat averaged 79.23 mph in what veteran racer Hook labeled "very tricky water."

Their time eclipsed an unofficial 2015 record of 1:30 set by Apache Star, and the 1922 sanctioned record of 6 hours.

Hook and Johnson attempted a faster return trip Thursday, but a drive shaft failure disabled one of two engines.

SilverHook's achievement is pending world-record sanctioning by the American Power Boat Association and Union Internationale Motonautique

48 foot badass boat - a couple of the best drivers in the world - and they averaged just 79 MPH. That must be some crazy water between Key West and Cuba. . Congrats

They also got the Key west to Cuba and back record,,,,,,,,,,,, don't think anyone has tried it but they still came back under their own power at about 45mph on the starboard engine.

Congratulations! Very Cool. I wonder if a record could be set in a single engine canopy race boat?

Go for it!

I remember following some of the circumnavigation of Australia in 1970 by Hans Tholstrup. He travelled the 9,000 miles in a 17' fibreglass runabout with a single engine and averaged 20mph over the total distance, stopping only for fuel, extra food/water and the occasional warm bed.

I think the engine was straight out of the box, not even run in.

Records are out there for the making and they all sound like fun adventures as well as achievements.
