How much power is generally needed to get out oh the "hop zone"?

600 per side should be plenty

So a boat with 500EFIs won't have enough power to drive through the hop?

Those hulls seem to be susceptible to hop between 75-100 like a previous owner mentioned on this thread. I’ve been told the hop is pronounced only in calm water. I’ve riding on a 3100 w/ 496MAG HOs at WOT and the boat was on rails in the low 90s. I wouldn’t be afraid to buy a 3100 w/ 500s. I personally think these boats have timeless lines and are a great performance value. If more HP is needed to drive through hop in certain water conditions then you’re forced to make your boat go faster!

Low 90s with 496HOs is impressive!

the AO 31 is a Chris Cat. it came out of the original Chris Cat molds. both will hop in the 70's or so and as soon as you start approaching 90 they will settle down. from the low/mid 90's and up is where they are the happiest and where the hull was made to work. I have run probably 8-9 Chris Cats and one AO and they all behave that way.

Thanks for the input. So, if the boat doesn't have enough power to crack 90 you're stuck in the "porpoise zone" when wide open on flat water?

And on average, how much chop does it take so these boats don't porpoise/hop?

I had a 3100 A/O with 500 efi's. They are a great boat and handled rough water pretty good because of their weight. The porpoise zone in mine was around 75-85 in any type of water conditions. In calm water the porpoise would start earlier and last a bit longer. A lot has to do with drive heights, I played around with mine changing the X dimension until I had the prop shaft 1" above. Best I ever saw was 96 mph, everyday was 93-94. (I also had Stelling extension boxes)

I love my Awesome 31, I've had it for 8 years now. I am still trying to figure out the hop, sometimes none then back again w/ same conditions. I am running 1200+ per side with number 5's and extension boxes so it is real easy to drive thru hop. I am always boat shopping, but I just love my Awesome. I have been looking at Nortech 3600's but reading their forums they have a similar issue with hop.
