Skater 18'...
Skater started in business building an 18' "full tunnel"...anyone have one?
|
is it really ugly looking? If so there was one on bentboat.com i think
sombody posted a link a while ago and there was debate over weatehr it was reallya skater or not. It was advertised as a skater 18' though. It was trashed and they wanted to much $$$$ for it. |
what year did skater started with 18'?
does anybody have any pics? what a story from 18' to worlds most famous and fast cats... |
They made them in the very early years.
Not fast. If you are looking for a fast 18 foot tunnel, find an STV, Mirage, or Triad. Talons run good, but not as good as the earlier mentioned. Or go with an Allison and outrun or run with any of them. This conversation came up on the S&F message board a while back, there was some decent knowledge of the boat over there. |
Theres one of those old skater 18's running around up by my cottage.Yes,its ugly.It looks like just about every other 18 foot outboard runnabout from the 70's/80's.

the 18 was'nt a true cat it has a center pod and a very short deck or bow if you will....thats IMHO why its kind of ugly but they run pretty hard a friend has one with a 2.4 on it that runs 90+ very safe ans stable ride and great ski boat....

SKATER....from humble beginnings!:)

Skater 18
I have a '79 Skater 18. It needs some refurbishing but will still do 75mph with the '86 200 merc trimmed and jacked all the way up. At this point, the transom starts to flex causing the boat to porpoise. I believe the were first one was made in 1976. My 18 doesn't have a full tunnel. I'm trying to get a picture on this post but having a problem. I'll try again later. Bill

There are a couple of them running around the Grand Haven/Holland area. There is a black one with gold trim I see on Lake Mac often. Seems to run real well. There is also a blue one with one of the old tall Merc's on it. Saw it for sale for $3500 at Coast Gaurd Festival this year. No idea who he is or where he is from.

Shane and I Think alot alike, ( WE LOVE SKATERS ) The 18' started in the 70's and made it into the 80's. I believe it was competing with cougars little cats. but like skater18 said not one of their more famous boats. I think Shane said his old 21 is for sale. What a great boat. Good Luck, Craig

here is an old ad for the skater 18

The original 18's were built in Quebec before Skater moved to Michigan. You still see 18's running around on the lakes north of Montreal.
|
Nice pic C12, my 18 only does 75mph. What do I need to do to get it up to 90 mph. My transom is a little loose. Ed I have a '79 skater 18 . I'll try to get some pics for you .

Here are some links to pictures of my 100+MPH 18' Skater. Ignore the 24 triple, and the 24 twin. It is for sale and is one of the best examples of the late 70s Skaters you'll find.
http://home.wmis.net/~tfoote/beach.jpg http://home.wmis.net/~tfoote/klaus.jpg http://home.wmis.net/~tfoote/turb.jpg It can handle water that'll slow a 25 check, and it seats 6! If you know of someone who wants a turbo 2.0L on a 79 18' Skater that will run over 100 MPH (on pump gas), send me an E-Mail. Todd [email protected] |
Didn't the 18 "S" model have a true tunnel, without the center pod?
I grew up riding in an 18. It was a great little boat, especially for cruising in small lakes all day long at 80 mph with 4 people. The flip down back seats always made for an interesting ride though when the water got a little rough. Made for a nice ski boat too--I think my uncle got up to about 60-65. Just a little crazy. |
Todd, nice pixs. The 18 looks great. How does the boat stay flat at 100mph. Write me an E-mail. Thanks, Bill

79 Skater 18
I have one on Lake of the Woods, Canada with a 200GT Johnson that runs around 70. Needs a merc! It will do over 90 mph with the right V6 on the back. Tunnel with center pod, and a step at the back of the hull.

My first boat back in the day. Just seeing this thread brings back some memories. Ran that little 18 across Erie to PIB a couple of times when we were kids, ran her hard all the time and never let me down. Eventually got to run a couple of different 46' skaters that a buddy had and had the opportunity to meet peter at the factory a couple of times ,super guy. From those little 18' boats to todays boats..........what a journey for Skater!!

If theres a Skater 18 still out there,,, ask blume, he knows:drink:
