99 35 Fountain.....How Fast???

My buddy is going to look at a 99 35 fountain on Saturday. The boat has HP500EFI's, IMCO extremes w/ Boxes and 90hrs.

The dude is telling my buddy that the boat will run 93 on the GPS. Seems a bit high to me.

I'm not a fountain guru, so i don't know exactly when they changed the 35's (eg. twin step, staggered). I asked my buddy if it was staggered, and he didn't know.

Also wondering what a fair price for this boat is. we haven't seen it yet, but guy says it's clean, has a custom 15k paint job, every avail fountain option, and a tri Myco.

Maybe some of you fountain guys can help me out. ;)

I know a Fountain in the Ozarks with 500's on boxes,CMI sport tube, so on so on. runs 90 plus a hair. It is also a 99 35 Lightining. Maybe the same one or sister. Craig Barrie

I have a 99 35 lightning single step with 502 magnums, regular bravo 1's, 23p Mirage Plus props, Stainless Marine exhaust, and valve train work in prep for blowers. I "guesstimate" the prop hp to be about 420-425

On a good day with 2 footers, 2 people, 1/2 tank of fuel I see a consistent 78-79 gps top end. With the same 2 people and vapors left in the tank I have once seen 80.3. More important for me, 4000 rpm = 60 mph consistently. That seems to be where I spend most of my throttle time with the family on board.

With 500 efi's you will have at least 50 more hp to the props on each side and a great deal more midrange torque. I would expect to see real good acceleration through the midrange; a few more mph at cruise and at wot. I would be surprised to see 13-15 more mph than my boat. But, I would also be happy to be wrong.

Hope this helps even though it's not the exact same set up.

Hi-perf-2000,
Was it setup at the Factory that way? Fountain built a bunch of boats with Stelling boxes in the late 90's. A boat out of Ohio with the same setup except 500 HP's with mild engine work was running 92 from Fountain. It was a single step "Classic". The boat had Patriot graphics. Grand Prix Marine had it for sale at the beginning of the summer asking $139,000.00. The 35' pleasure boats were not offered as staggards.

It seems a little on the fast side since Fountain says the new 35 twin stepp w 500efi is a 86-88mph boat. However the boat may be dialed in perfectly. Take a gps with ya, if it does hit 90+ I would be looking to see what RPM it is turning also? Rev limiter should be around 5250 from merc?:p

Thanks for the info guys.....

candyman...I'm not too sure if the boat came factory equiped this way? i haven't spoke to the seller myself, i'm getting second hand info from my buddy who just knows the basics of high performance boats...so he's not thinking of all these questions.

The guy is asking $125 for the boat. i thought that was a pretty good deal looking at the market price of these. i guess it depends on how clean the boat is when we see it, and how "custom" the paint job is  .

I would definitly say that the guy is pulling your chain. no way will a single step 35 fountain with 500efi's run 90 mph. Especially in full pleasure dress. The twin step, which is an extremely efficient hull will not run over 90 in pleasure dress either. a PERFECTLY dialed in 35 twin step in full factory race mode(pier 57) will run a consistent 90 mph, and at kilo set up, and in PERFECT water it will run near or at 94. the possibility of a 35 foot plasure boat, vee hull, running 90+ is slim, but doable. i just dont beleive that the hull of a 99 is capable of doing it. there are 3 or four hulls capable of that maybe, with a 35 twin step fountain included. other than that, i would not beleive it until i held a gps, and witnessed it with my own eyes. im sur that the boat is a good boat, and im sure it is fast, but i just dont beleive that it is THAT fast.

I know the boat candy speaks of, a local guy sold it this summer. 500's carbs w/ cmi's and boxes, he told me consistent 88 mph.

candyman35 10-18-2002 11:18 PM

27 FOUNTAIN,
The boat was called Short Circuit. The performance sheet from Fountain showed 92. I would say 88 on GPS sounds about right. I was told too different stories about that boat. The owner told me the engines were stock except for the CMI's. Grand Prix told me the motors were tweaked by Joey Griffin, I'm not sure of the spelling. Either way that’s moving for the single step. This is a link to another 35' with boxes. http://www.fountainusa.com/199835splash.htm
