Even if Merc only stayed with a two hp setting on their engines, rationally - the first hint of having not enough octane is knock... if Merc can create their guardian system with full blown diagnostics, adding a postage stamp sized coding into the ecm could in theory be a switch between the two hp ranges automatically when the engine's ability to adjust timing goes beyond spec at a higher hp setting. A short amount of dyno time should give the thumb print on the engines characteristics running on each fuel octane in order to create a "octane" sensing engine

Then again, loosing a key and having to replace it is potential more $$$ for Merc than having an engine that is self regulating

Factory Billet and their 1650/1950 twin turbo engines actually monitor fuel/octane so you dont have to empty your tank completely to run race gas. The engine automatically adjusts hp to fuel content
