Magnum Marine 35 vs 38?
 

I've watched a few guys go perform outboard conversions on the Magnum Marine boats. I'm thinking this may be my next project. Can anyone tell me the main difference between the 35 and 38? Is there a difference in hull design or anything like that? I've been searching around but wanted to throw it out there to see what those on here have to say. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

I think they would be very Heavy, back then they used lots of glass in the hull.

Thats the idea, the 35 is approx. 19,000lbs, all that displacement to bash through the nasty stuff that pops up down here in the gulf of mexico.

The 35 was stretched to a 38 and became a better running hull. It was then stretched to a 40 and became an even better running hull.

The first photo of PATRICE, was my 38, with gas engines. Second photo same boat and you can see it was very light as the boat was really designed for diesel.

Big white boat was the first 53 footer. Dark blue boat tied up was the 53 footer of Peter D'Savary, finished out as support boat for America's Cup races. Next big white boat was the first 63 footer of Herb Chambers.

Last photo was my 38 tied up with a 24 Banana Boat of a customer of mine.

I would say for an outboard re-power, the 38 would be the best choice, with 3 or 4 on a bracket off the transom.

Not that familiar with the 38 was only on one once but was on the 35 a few times. Old v-drive boat it rode great on a trip to the Bahamas in sloppy seas. It ha quite a wide beam with a lot of weight. Outboards are great I convert cigarettes as a hobby and the run fantastic with less maintenance. But you better have some $$$ for the power you need unless you want to coast. Thanks for the pics Top and the backstory. I'm planning on getting either a 35 or 38, putting on a set of trip 300 to 400s. A guy just redid a 35 w/ trip 300 zukes, he has reported about 40mph cruise at 1mpg, tops out low 60s. He put a 400 gallon tank where the iron beasts used to sit, that keeps a lot of weight forward of the transom. I'm thinking of using it to do everything in, be a great boat to make overnight tuna trips, island hopping runs to the bahamas. The hull seems like an all around winner for what I'm looking to do.

Getting the bug to try a resto on a 38 or maybe a 40 with some of these new outboards.

What is the beam on the 38 ? Make a hell of a Center console.
