I used 3M Heavy Duty Hull and Deck Cleaner. Did a great job at taking off the black residue on thre transom (from the exhaust) and the waterline scum. Bought it for $7.- at Wal-Mart. Best stuff I've tried so far...

I don't have a slip and boat never sits in the water for more than a weekend at a time, so I can't say about heavy algae growth. Still, I usually notice a "slimy" buildup at the waterline. Regular soap and water dosen't touch this stuff, but the 3M cleaner took it right off. Also worked great on the textured non-skid areas such as the swim platform (used a brush). After I cleaned the hull with the 3M stuff, I waxed with Meguiars #6 liquid cleaner wax and it came out great. Looks like new.
Hope that helps!

What is good for black exhaust on transom. I am now using simple green or super cleaner but it still takes scrubing.

I finally used the stuff that I bought from Dave a few months back. It works pretty well. It did a great job off getting rid of the lingering algae and scum lines. It still took some scrubbing to get off the heavy stuff. All in all, I would say that it is worth the investment. It is easy to apply, like a liquid wax, let it set for about 3-5 minutes, and spray off. I then washed the whole boat top to bottom, and it is now cleaner than when I bought it. On my 26' boat, using liberally, I used about 1/3 of the bottle. The whole boat is ready for a wazing now before the long winter nap.

And... Simple Green just came out with a more transparent Lemon cleaner that worked well on cleaning off the exhaust stains as well. I bought it at Walmart.

Thanks again Dave.

What cleaner is the easiest to use for the black soot on the transom Is this stuff the ticket or is it for the scum line?
I want a spray on and wash off type product if possible. Too many parts and hoses on the transom to try and wipe something on.
