thisistank 03-17-2018 11:30 AM

That's CRAZY!!

One question....Why the f*ck would you do that?

sprsptr 03-17-2018 11:57 AM

Very impressive, some folks just can't be dissuaded with logic or reason tank!

Unlimited jd 03-17-2018 12:21 PM

WHY?????? I have thrown away so many hulls and have 3 sitting here now I’d give away if someone actually showed up. Crazy what some people put themselves through

Blueabyss 03-17-2018 12:47 PM

Next time I get a scratch on my boat, I know who to take it to..lol..

Chris

Blueabyss 03-17-2018 12:50 PM

I just watched it again and happened to see the credits. Built by some guy with the last name Darville..... Darr...lol... And you guys have been giving him chit all these years and come to find out he can build a boat...lol..

Nuke427 03-17-2018 01:41 PM

That is absolutely nuts. And never once was it worked on inside? Wow.

gofastboater 03-17-2018 01:57 PM

One of those "Just because I can" projects.

thisistank 03-17-2018 02:28 PM

Anyone remember the guy that was re-doing the Top Gun that burned and part of the port side gunnel at the cockpit burned about half way down from about the engine bulkhead to the bolster area? Or maybe it was in the engine bay....Either way, guy was super into the project and was posting it on here and then I think he gave up because everyone...And I mean EVERYONE said it couldn't be done safely and the boats integrity would never be the same because the heat changes the fiberglass etc. I can't find the thread to save my life. It was in the early 2000's I want to say. Reminds me of this project.

Dude, you're like the OSO whisperrt lol!! That is the boat I was talking about. I'm almost positive so many people said it would be unsafe and couldn't be done that he gave up. I'd like to find the thread and have looked a few times. No dice.

thirdchildhood 03-17-2018 06:42 PM

Some people like to work on boats and some people like to drive them. I like to drive them ...

Rookie 03-17-2018 07:13 PM

So, this is where I send my AT to get steps put in???... lol
This might be one of the first YouTube videos going into it, that I was thinking that I would want the next 7:46 of my life back. Pleasantly surprised, great vid.

US1 Fountain 03-17-2018 10:51 PM

it would have been easier to start with .....just an idea

tmmii 03-17-2018 10:54 PM

The before pictures remind me of so many new member posts when someone finds a great deal. 😂😂

have to wonder how off the weight and cg are in the boat.

Too Stroked 03-18-2018 06:48 AM

I found a rusted navigation light base on the beach the other day. Should I build a boat back around it?

rak rua 03-18-2018 07:51 AM

Incredible but insane.
I'll bet this guy's not married.

LaughingCat 03-18-2018 07:52 AM

Did anyone else wonder how it performs with teh engine bracket riding low? Seems like the bottom will drag or perhaps keep teh stern too high at speed.

Hey , it was a FREE boat . Just imagine how much he saved instead of buying a new one !

And I think that a rusty bow light found on the beach is a great starting point for a rebuild. Hell , I once did it with only a transom drain tube !

Uh oh , it's 10am . Time for my meds again .

Also consider the values of the straight bottom guns were dropping significantly every year so even when finished the value was going to be even lower because you could buy a non toaster TG for a lot less than when the project started.

Even the all white twin step boat OSO Steve had a hole punched in was cursed by lower resale even after it was repaired by Cigarette!

It's his business

phughes69 03-18-2018 12:59 PM

Like others have said, why put all that time, effort and money into a complete rebuild when you could have a complete hull for cheaper. But then I think about Heath and Endeavor32's restoration of the 38 Scarab. They will never get out of it what they put into it if they sell, but the Scarab (to us at least) are worth way more than some unknown33' fishing hull. Other thing I noticed was how few stringers were in that boat. If you look at Heath's boat you see how extensive the stringer grid is.https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...14e7ea99f9.jpg

im almost wondering if maybe the dude figured that out, stopped posting, completed the work, ran it for a while and pu it on the market no one the wiser with out taking the hit of the “history” . Weirder things have happened, just sayin.

pm203 03-18-2018 07:57 PM

I think you guys are missing the point. Of course it doesn't make sense to resurrect this boat. But, the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction of a project like this can be so much more rewarding than any amount of money or time invested. It could even be called therapeutic to some.

Level III Chaos 03-20-2018 01:13 AM

I'd like this guy to help my son with some of his school "projects". JFC!!!

Stuckonstupid 03-20-2018 09:33 PM

If everyone in this world had 1/2 the fortitude of this guy the world would be a better place. Who gives a sh!t why he did it?

LaughingCat 03-21-2018 07:00 AM

Anyone curious about the backstory on the hull? Perhaps it was one of the known stolen boats that was burned. Looks like the fire took out all identifiers. Does anyone have an idea what make/model the hull is?

Agree, I love it.

Wildman_grafix 03-21-2018 07:12 AM

I understand the fortitude comments but wouldn't it have been easier to build a mold and make a new one? You could make more then one then, or start with something not as bad.

Fortitude is great but just wasting your effort is another.

speicher lane 03-21-2018 07:50 AM

I know a number of shops that have questionable projects on the go - when shop's business gets slow, they drag out "???" and have the greenhorns work on them for training experience under the watchful eye of the company money makers. The consensus was that if they can possibly sell the project at the end were at least they break even with materials and the pay for the "greens" salary, its a win for the company with the experience gained which in the big picture, will make the shop more profitable.

Not implying that is the case here, but there is always another outlook to a situation

We all have a different perception on what should be undertaken, and what can be accomplished. I submit that the culmination of this project defies any wasted effort. If the restoration had not been completed with such positive results, then I agree it would have been a foolhardy endeavor. We all have different skill levels, and certainly these folks have much greater than average abilities. Also, look at the publicity value garnered for this group of craftsmen. I can see the headlines now - "No job too big" LOL!

JRider 03-23-2018 10:36 AM

Wow, would have been just as easy to make a new mold.
