California boating?

Looks like I'm heading to CA, work op. How is the boating North of San Fran? and any suggestion of how and who to get the lady to CA?

North of San Francisco—north of Point Conception for that matter? Exposed Rough. Huge water. A summer experience only. Even then, the west wind tends to come up early and howl. Or the fog just offshore is pea soup all day. Pacific Ocean boating up here is not for the faint of heart.

But on the right day, the water can lay down and become a sheet of glass and the coast is spectacular.

Thanks Matt. The Avanti is built for rough. :) I really rather sell anyway, and not move it. You should right some article about Charlie MaCarthie's last hull. (From the Banana Boat / Coyote hulls) Mine is the last one puled from the mold in 2007, rigged new in 2008. I will push on the sale in a few days.

The Farallon islands are right off San Francisco, you can go out there and feed the really big fish....

I went into San Francisco way back in the navy days, and it can be big water up there and a bit on the chilly side...

There is a lot of "North of San Francisco". All 7 bays of San Francisco are good boating as well as the Sacramento/Stockton/Maculumee Rivers all connected to the bays for great boating. I would boat in the delta (1,000+ miles of navigable waters) in the summer and the bays in the winter. Lots to see and do.
Looking forward as to where you will be headed. Best of luck.

Staying somewhere in Napa Valley. Sonoma perhaps. Looking for places and it's fraking nuts for housing. But the numbers are OK, so I'm heading West. :)

Sonoma area is for sure a nice area. Lived there for 12 years. Be sure and check out the "Sacramento Delta" the boating/social aspects are plentiful.
SF bays you can bar hop from SF/Pier 39/Sausalito/Tiburon/San Rafael/Oakland/Benicia/Vallejo, well you get the idea. Best of luck.

I was thinking north of San Francisco as in Pacific Ocean, meaning coastal, rather than San Francisco Bay and its many connected waterways. (I split my time between Belmont just south of San Francisco ... I'm looking at the city and bay right now ... and St. Helena in northern Napa Valley.) You're definitely right about the bays and the Delta.

Talk about some fun slop and chop, Sacramento River with winds and tide and the Carquinez Straights.
Now lets talk Terra in St. Helena. Please tell me it is still that good,

Terra is still there and still awesome, as is Bar Terra. Cook restaurant, still amazing, too. Next time you're up, try Acacia House at the (relatively) new Los Alcobas hotel in St. Helena. Fantastic.

The last night I spent in St. Helena (some years ago) was at the city jail. Very nice staff, clean private room, no restaurant and very expensive not to mention the valet parking was ridiculously over priced.

I can be your tour guide for the delta. Best boating on the west coast period! Shoot me a DM and we will connect. Good size poker run out here and a few boat clubs that do cool events. Always something going on around the delta.

I haven't been too far outside the Gate but we boat all over SF Bay and the entire Delta. We love the Petaluma river to downtown Petaluma. Hope to meet you sometime.

It’s a great time to hang out in the bay during fleet week. Most of the fast boats play in the delta and Discovery Bay Area.
