Making offer on a sunk boat
I’m looking at a boat and was just told it sank after putting in the water. If $100000 would have bought it yesterday what’s it worth pulled out (fresh water ) and just pickled ? |
how can anyone answer this ?

Too many variables.......if the boat has insurance then they will likely total it minus deductible. Motors can be pickled but you ruined the ECU's and who knows what else. It is still winter in most of the country, I'd take the 100K and try to buy a boat that is only covered in frozen water. |
I understand it’s a cluster. But was more wondering when they say make offer is $10000 a fair offer. 500s are worth that |

500’s that didn’t go swimming are worth that. |
Having to salvage our race boat after sinking in the Atlantic, My take is you will have to replace anything that is electrical. Engines will have to be disassembled and rebuilt. Same with drives. Length of submersion is also an issue with stringers, bulkheads, etc....

I'm guessing most owners want them to stay down once they sink. That's the beauty of deep water.

Dude, boating season is around the corner. Move on. Nobody buys a project in April.
|
Plus what you were “told” is probably no where near the actual truth. The boat is worthless in my opinion. |
I’m not buying it. But to clear things up. It was a boat we were going to buy. The dealer put it in the water to test it. Forgot to put the 3 drain plugs in it sunk at dock. Was pulled out same day fresh water. Was a great boat. Just happened Tuesday night/wedsday morning. We were supposed to go there Saturday.

I have seen that happen... even though the marina takes immediate action to "save" the engines from the bath - within a year+ EVERY electrical part will need to be replaced...alternator here, then a starter,,coils corrode along with the harnesses....never stops but the engine blocks are strong if they correctly did several oil changes to purge the internals
......and interiors don't like dunking - unstoppable mold factory unless the skins are pulled and foam is totally dried out as there will be moisture trapped long after the item appears dry - big process to do correctly vs the "should be good enough" attitude |
What brand/model boat are talking about here? If it is a common or mass produced rig, my initial reaction would be to move on to another that is available with a clean history. If you are considering a unique, high end or historically significant craft, then MAYBE proceed. As others have stated, a lot of hidden issues down the road may impact you financially, including re - sale value. The folks here have a long memory, and a notorious boat will usually be outed! JMHO

Any photos of how far down she went?
You were shopping for a boat that had not (recently) been sunk. They changed the boat's category, so you are correct to move on. |
I knew a boat that sunk on a Friday was back on the water by Sunday, over engines but below dash.

Just run from it as fast as you can. No amount of money and time can restore it to new. WAY to many unknowns to deal with. ALL electricals would have to be replaced, All fabrics would have to be stripped off and the motors would HAVE to be gone thru. As said before, if it is a "special" boat, maybe. Other than that run as far away from it as you can get. Just consider it the one that got away. Just my .02.
