Repower Happines!

I finally got a chance to get out on my Formula 232ls. I re-powered last year from a small block 350 mag to a big block 8.2. what a difference. Wot low 60's mph, cruise 45mph. I had Performance Marine in Bolton Landing NY do the work. Jason and his crew are top notch. With a "not so straight forward" re power they handled it well. Jason was very patient with me and my questions. The difference is night and day. Thanks again. P.S. you need that added torque with a heavy boat.

Thats. A big change! Wont be more thirsty than your small 350!!!

Congrats on the BBC move.
My Rinker has a 454 and it will do 60 but just barely with 21 pitch. Seeing your doing low 60's with the 502, wonder what prop your running. Your boat weights 4300, and mine is 4000 but beam and length are the same. Like the added weight of the Formula. You getting speed with GPS?

Yes all GPS readings. I have a 28p B3. The biggest change to me is the cruise speed. You can just feel the engine push the boat. I feel that's the torque. I'm hoping it wont be too thirsty, compared to the overworked 350.

My 454 cruises easy at 40 and gets about 2 to 2.5 to the gallon, real easy. the small blocks drink gas IMO because they work so hard.

I've got the same package in a Mag 25 and love it . Unlike you though I have no before and after comparison as it was a complete rebuild resto of a naked hull .
I'm sure that you can really notice how effortlessly the boat gets up on plane now .
What gear ratio are you running ? I'm running 26" props through a 2.0:1 ratio and get 4950 WOT rpm on a 25 footer (and a heavy one at that) so I was surprised to see you running 28" props .

Wharf Rat 1 05-11-2018 07:04 AM

I have a 2.0:1 ratio in my B3. I find it hard to dial in props, when you have to purchase them without knowing if they are right or not. Not many have a B3, so to barrow is not going to happen. I'm quite happy where it is.

I sure know about that too . We had a huge screw up with our order and amongst other things Merc sent the 2.0:1 ratio instead of what we ordered , but sent the original 24" prop set . We had done enough homework to be certain that they were going to be too small and refused to run them as they were adamant that they were ours once they were run.
Accepting full responsibility we got them to exchange them for 26's and they were the exact right set.
Unfortunately , with DP units all you have to work with is what they make and just hope that you get your WOT rpms where you want them to be .
What's your WOT rpm and do you have the 3/3 or the 4/3 propset ?

Wharf Rat 1 05-11-2018 07:00 PM

Wot was 5300 rpm's and running 3x3 prop's.
