New Yamaha 425s

One Mean Engine, The All New Yamaha 425HP V8 Has Arrived - Ocean Of News

Looks to be one very impressive engine. The fact that it has true electronic steering (fly by wire) is amazing. So are the 17″ props!

Yamaha Marine has officially unveiled the monstrous V8 XTO Offshore, a 425-horsepower, naturally aspirated 5.6L outboard.

The new engine, which will be start shipping in August, carries a five-year limited warranty for pleasure use and comes in three different shaft lengths – 25 inches, 30 inches and 35 inches. When fitted with a propeller and filled with motor and gearcase oil, the 35-inch XTO weighs more than 1,000 pounds. “This engine is designed to take us to the next level of what we can possibly do with outboard motors within the industry,” Speciale added. “We are answering the call for bigger boats with a different platform, a new, big-block 5.6L V8. It’s all about integrating power systems into much larger boats.”

New XTO OS propellers are made to complement the torque potential of the Yamaha V8 XTO Offshore. These new propellers produce more thrust in both forward and reverse, using diameters from 16 to 17 1/8 inches.

this will be great for the large CC being built , And maybe give mother Merc a reason to boost some power out of these O/B motor's there building :)

1000 pounds each is really heavy, no? What about cost? It will be interesting to see what boats will use them. I agree that the CC people will be all over them but to me the motor on a performance cat should always be black! NEW RULE!!

This is pretty stupid. The 5 year warranty is attractive, but 425hp @999 lbs?? Seven's 627 is 627hp @ 1,094lbs and Mercury is 400hp @ 668lbs.

Yamaha 425: 2.35 lb/ hp
Yamaha 350: 2.23 lb/ hp
Seven 627: 1.74 lb/ hp
Mercury 400: 1.67 lb/ hp
Mercury 350: 1.91 lb/ hp

I really believe that Yamaha made the wrong decision, and Mercury's new effort is an opportunity for Mercury to get some of their market share back.

Would be cool to see a test on say a 34 Nor-Tech. One with twin 425 Yam's and one the twin 400r Merc's.

I didn’t look at the whole article but isn’t the merc 400r’s only 400 if 93 is ran?

hard to find that at marinas so if the Yamaha’s can be 425 on normal marina gas it would be a interesting test. Still heavy motors for the size.

The weight is tough to deal with but if it eliminates the hydraulic steering then that would save weight. Not sure if the Merc weight # includes the hydraulic steering or not.

The serviceability (from the water, not needing to be pulled out) and the warranty are highlights for the motor.

i find it funny that premium is hard to get on the water in a lot of places. Never been an issue here far back as I can remember. Now race fuel you had to get on your own and still do LOL.
