Default outdrive clicking noise (intermittent)

Sometimes when I slow down from high speed or speed up from idle, I hear a weird bumping clicking noise that sounds like outdrive but not sure. It's almost like the sound made when slowing down from high speed and engine goes to idle but prop is spinning from moving through water fast. The difference is that when the noise starts, it usually will do it forward, reverse or right through neutral. I can't pin it down. It is not always either. I can stop for a few seconds or restart and the noise goes away. If I just try to run through it, there is a vibration I can feel in the boat. Ideas?

What engine and drive combination? Assuming it’s a sterndrive, when was the last time the gimble bearing was checked/aligned?

Last time I heard a click or knock coming from an outdrive, it blew a bearing out the side a short time later. Any different noise is not good. This was on a 350 mag, bravo 1 boat.

I can’t confirm where the noise is from. It’s almost like the sound of a slipping dog but can’t be sure. Could it be the connector to the engine?

It’s also very intermittent and I can’t pin down what sets it off

Open the motor hatch and have someone else drive to confirm its not in the motor compartment.
