When the bank account doesnt have gas money............then Ill just sit in it and make engine noises.

Actually this thread couldn't have come at a better time for me, it actually got me thinking, A LOT, i've had a range of boats over the years from v drive and jet boats to a Formula 400SS with 525s, but the 38' Cigarette was my favorite all around boat, it wasn't the best for everything but still for my style of boating it was great, if i hadn't had to pay off the ex i would still have it. So now i'm finally into a position to get another boat and the realization that this most likely will be my last performance boat has kind of hit me. i'm almost 60 but still haven't quite grown up. Now the question is do i just go for it and spend more than i planned and get a newer, faster, and just all around nicer boat, as i'm typing this i think ive kind of answered my own question. besides if i don't spend the money on a boat its just going to get wasted on something silly like savings or something stupid like that.

At age 79 with an eighty mile per hour Donzi and a 165 mile per hour Ducati the question of when to start turning down the heat is there when I look in the mirror each morning. A judgement call needs to be personally made about your eyes, about your coordination, about your hunger for the speed feeling plus all the pain to keep the gear up.
|
You gotta like that ^^^^. Respectfully, 79 is not young and you still ride a Ducati and take a Donzi for a spin. As long as your health is up there and you enjoy it, why stop? :)
RR . |
This will certainly be my last HP boat. Will make the switch to the CC in next couple years. |
With my luck, the day before I bite the big one.

I turned 74 back in March and sold the boat the same month. I was having a hard time justifying the costs of ownership including storage, well, transportation and a repower that wasn't working out plus finding a wet stringer and possibly more wet wood. Decided it was time to move on, 40+ years of boating was enough. I even posted my farewell here on OSO.
But then In April bought a small C.C., it's enough to get on the water and also allows us to explore the many smaller inland lakes in Northern Michigan and don't need a truck to pull it. I had truly forgotten how easy boating can be. Plus I still have the 60+mph iceboat for a real rush. Reading all these posts I have one piece of advice for everyone wanting to boat as they get older. Don't spend retirement or kids college money on boats thinking you'll somehow recoup. ed |
One thing has been niggling at me......... I change boats too often and take a big $$$ loss every time as you'd expect. If I planned on say 3 or 4 more boats in my life then made a guess how much I would lose with the buying/selling, I could factor all the losses in to buying one boat and sticking with it. All that extra money I'd save from changing would buy something pretty special. Common sense and maths would tell me to buy my last boat now if I can dump the current one. :) RR . |

ed I attended Duke's college tour a few weeks back. First year estimated costs: $72,510. To me that is a 300K decision just for 4 years undergrad for one kid! They do reduce the tuition based on household income but until you make 60K a year or less (school then becomes free) the math still hurts. At 150K household income they want you to pay 45K, which in most cases means over 1/3 of your net income goes to tuition. Who can trim 1/3 of their income for the next 4 years and still pay their bills? |
It's all abut the 3 B's: "I spent all my money on Boats, Booze and Babe's - the rest I just wasted..."
|
if I have back all the money I spent on booze, cars, and boats.............id spend it on booze, cars and boats...........the only money I wasted was getting married.

I am 69 and very happy with my Velocity but if I see something I like/want and I can afford it it will be my next boat not my last. Guarantee that it will be a performance boat and definitely not a fishing boat masquerading as a performance boat. LOL

Maybe not my last boat but probably a forever boat.....I plan to retire young in a few years and add a new 55-70 foot sail catamaran, whatever basically is the biggest I feel comfortable with myself and one other person getting in and out of ports. I plan to travel the world for a good 5 -10 years, maybe more, just go with the flow. I of course need to learn how sail too, though with all of the tech now everything is practically controlled by computers. Can't wait. Maybe I can tow my speed boat behind me lol

Thanks everyone, interesting answers. OK, I'm 54 and have downsized a couple of times primarily due to lack of use and just financially sensible rather than holding too much $$ in a typically shrinking asset. My plan was to keep my current boat until I'm 60 ish then decide on going back to a bigger boat, probably cruiser, or staying smaller performance boat but brand new. Haven't bought a brand new boat for a long time and like the idea of owning exactly what I want rather than what someone else wanted. I'm still a little way from that point but now realise that my next boat will probably be my last boat. Hopefully finances will be good at the time so I might be tempted to spend more. I'm not filthy rich at all but I plan to enjoy what I have, but like everyone, I don't know when to start enjoying it......:) RR P.S. I'm especially happy to read comments from those who love their current boats so much they will be their last boats. . |
Well not sure it's our last boat but just pulled the trigger on new 42X. This is a 60th birthday present. So agree with many others on this thread, enjoy what you love to do and do it as long as you love it. Stay tuned new boat build thread coming. |

Building it for me and my 13 year old daughter , it will be hers when I get older, Single Mercury Bulldog / Trs combo. She loves loud powerboats, so it’s going to have dry pipes as well. She will be the only girl in the world with a boat like that ! |
Could be my last boat. ;-)

The guy who inspired me to ask the "last boat" question is a fairly private person. However, I don't think he'd mind me saying, his budget went up but it's his 'last boat' so why not! Love it or hate it (I love it) hoping to go for a ride one day. :) 60' inc platform (and beak!) huge 18'4" beam. RR |
Adding my 2 cents here, can't really say when I'll buy my last boat. Started with a 23 Nova XL with a small block. Moved up to a 30 Wellcraft cruiser. Got the performance bug so I bought a 38 Top Gun. Decided to get something smaller so the gun went down the road.
Ended up buying a 47 Fountain SC with triples. Lol. So much for downsizing. It's a sickness .🤒 |
Getting closer and closer to 60 man I hate the sound of that period. I prob have a couple more buys in me. I have driven so many boats and I mean so many from bayliners - bajas - to cigs to fountains to cobalts to scarabs to Donzi s to Toyota Marine and all the wake board brands along with many bass boats and even pontoon boats thru out since the 80 s to current being in the boat biz. The odd part is, I have never personally owned a twin staggard engine boat but have owned many side by sides. I actually want a staggard engine boat. I also really like 27 to 30 ft single engine boats alot - prob my favorites.. I have a couple of more buys in me 4 sure
I have never driven a Warlock or Activator or a Kyript. I want to at least drive these 3 brands just saying |
38 years old, so I have a couple left in me. At some point I'd like to do something kind of extreme - maurader or a big cat. Would like to try turbine power at some point..... My father lives next to me and is 73. I can see at his age it makes sense to be in something smaller and more useable.... I think my last boat will be a small classic donzi. |
I’m on my second “last boat”. Both project full rebuilds. The latest last boat is scheduled for two years of work. I’m a glutton for punishment. Kids should be out of the house and off to college about the time it’s done. Latest boat will have facilities for wife and I to spend overnights. Jason |
Great Question. I'm building a Skater 368 now. Should be done by March/April 2020. I'm 58 and keep things a long, long time. It will be my last boat. At least I'm pretty sure it will be.
|
Timely question for my self as well. I'm 61 currently building another 30 Suberboat Y2K. I've always had boats in my life since the age of about 10. Been almost 8 years since my last go fast, and the Kayaks while fun, haven't been cutting it. I have been blessed with the use of my brothers' boats when I asked as they both have several. I've been wondering at this age if I'm going to do another performance boat, I better get busy!!! So yes I pulled the trigger. It may be my last but never say never.
I have also been considering shelter Island yachts, I sure have a soft spot for them. Not many for sale and timing is everything. I missed an opportunity that I regret. One recently for sale (Bernie Madoffs old boat) to me is too much money and once I learned that, my wife and I fear some bad ju ju may follow. Being superstitious and all...Always looking and pondering! |
