One thing has been niggling at me.........
I change boats too often and take a big $$$ loss every time as you'd expect. :rolleyes: If I planned on say 3 or 4 more boats in my life then made a guess how much I would lose with the buying/selling, I could factor all the losses in to buying one boat and sticking with it. All that extra money I'd save from changing would buy something pretty special.

Common sense and maths would tell me to buy my last boat now if I can dump the current one. :)

Another tip, don't blow your retirement on your kids college either! I had a guy tell me he sent his kid to law school after paying private college undergrad and his retirement suffered. Guy was in sales, lived in a 1mm house, nice cars, wife never worked. He recently retired to a 300K house, downsized to simpler cars. Kid decided to be a govt lawyer and isn't really making any money but has all the big city living expenses. He told me in hindsight he should have fueled his retirement and let the kid go to state schools.

I attended Duke's college tour a few weeks back. First year estimated costs: $72,510. To me that is a 300K decision just for 4 years undergrad for one kid! They do reduce the tuition based on household income but until you make 60K a year or less (school then becomes free) the math still hurts. At 150K household income they want you to pay 45K, which in most cases means over 1/3 of your net income goes to tuition. Who can trim 1/3 of their income for the next 4 years and still pay their bills?

It's all abut the 3 B's: "I spent all my money on Boats, Booze and Babe's - the rest I just wasted..."

if I have back all the money I spent on booze, cars, and boats.............id spend it on booze, cars and boats...........the only money I wasted was getting married.

OK, I'm 54 and have downsized a couple of times primarily due to lack of use and just financially sensible rather than holding too much $$ in a typically shrinking asset. My plan was to keep my current boat until I'm 60 ish then decide on going back to a bigger boat, probably cruiser, or staying smaller performance boat but brand new. Haven't bought a brand new boat for a long time and like the idea of owning exactly what I want rather than what someone else wanted.

I'm still a little way from that point but now realise that my next boat will probably be my last boat. Hopefully finances will be good at the time so I might be tempted to spend more. I'm not filthy rich at all but I plan to enjoy what I have, but like everyone, I don't know when to start enjoying it......:)

Great question, and very cool to hear what people are thinking about and their attitudes. I specially liked the “next boat versus last boat” comment. It’s that guys outlook on life, irrelevant of his age. I’m in my mid 40s and have a 3 year old daughter, we live on a small navigable lake in miami, and think more about what her first boat is going to be :) id love an old Alison maybe

Well not sure it's our last boat but just pulled the trigger on new 42X. This is a 60th birthday present.

So agree with many others on this thread, enjoy what you love to do and do it as long as you love it. Stay tuned new boat build thread coming.
