new merc 250s & 300s are N/A. V8s.

That surprised me. I like the perfectly balanced straight six engine and the seven main bearings over a V8. But the V8 weighs ten pounds less than the blown 6cyl

anyone in the states running these engines yet. They arrive in Colombia in dec

Not many yet. They are super light. Some models have a switchable exhaust that sounds really bad ass.

The Rs are making 316hp. Initial reports are all good. They are faster than the 300xs per scream and fly. Price is good but not Suzuki good. If they are reliable Merc has a real winner on their hands.

Everyone is pumped at the prospect of a 500hp supercharged version if merc decides to go that route like the verado. They don’t have to though, as it displaces 4.6L and they could stretch it to 400hp NA probably.

the 300xs v8 is only 505 lbs. the 350 l6 verado is 668 and the 300 v8 verado is 600. id say mercury has done a hell of a job saving weight. I just hope it doesn't come at the cost of reliability

i doubt it will hurt reliability ... There are companies with CNC programs to cut bbc blocks and remove excess material that isn’t needed to a tune of 130+ lbs. if you had weight savings in mind when your engineers designed these new V8s you could save a little weigh everywhere it adds up to a lot. Like making trim rams out of tubing instead of a solid piece of steel.
im after tq tho so think a boosted straight six might be the best deal for my application.
I look at my 67 camaro with an 804 hp 540 bbc and 710ft lbs of tq. I know another guy with a blown Ls motor making 800hp but he is making 1100ft lbs of tq and it comes in down low. Which is where i want it for getting on plane. I also like the fact a straight six has perfect balance so no need for a counter balancer which adds weight and parasitic hp loss. also the seven main bearings in a straight six makes them bullet proof! All the best big diesels are straight sixes. Food for thought If you’re a small boat or cat guy a high reving 4t that weighs the same as a 2t like the merc xs. Will have similar power on the dueño but might not accelerate quite as quickly as the 2t engine. But tq will come in lower and stronger I imagine.
How long have the merc V8s been on the market in the states? They arrive in Colombia in December. Thx, Rm

Is the 300V8 xs a 2t? I thought it was a V6... So there is a 100lb diff 2t vs 4t on the 300s. Does the 4t 350 weigh the same as the 300???

Fixed it for you.

Ratman,
300XS is 2 stroke/3.2L/V6, no longer available.
300R replaced it in Mercury Racing line. 4 stroke/4.6L/V8.
Also available is a 300 ProXS in the production line up (4T/4.6L/V8, 3 ram trim, no sportmaster gear case).

yeah I meant the 300 pro xs
