Key West

Okay booked to go this year (last time was at least 15 years ago). Looks like the waterfront has change quit a bit over the years. So what is parking like near the venue these days? We are staying out near the airport so thought we would just drive there, but heard not a lot of parking around the area anymore. Thought about renting a couple scooters and just leave the car at the hotel. Give me your thought. Thanks

Sydwayz 09-14-2018 12:41 PM

Just take a taxi or Uber. They are plentiful.
Or rent a scooter.

Nate5.0 09-14-2018 12:43 PM

We got garage parking off Duval just fine last month, however we are parking our car and will just uber or rent bikes to where we are going, too much of a headache to deal with.

Tiki Joe 09-14-2018 01:58 PM

rent bikes....there's not a hill in Key West; so very easy to pedal around and "park" them.

Scooters

Allrisks 09-14-2018 02:30 PM

Thanks for the info. Looked at the bicycle option but age and leg issues kind of rule them out. Will figure it out once we get there on Thursday.

Scooters, bikes or golf carts. They’ll even deliver to your hotel. Ask at front desk.

Pete B 09-14-2018 05:46 PM

parking no matter where you go by car sux

Sydwayz 09-15-2018 08:59 AM

And scooter parking is actually a PITA at times too because they ticket the fock out of them. They have to be in designated parking spots.

Hogs Breath makes you pay for scooter parking, and they tow them several miles north of you don’t. They tow them so far that you can’t legally ride them back down Rt1 (for whatever reason). So you have to cab/Uber up there, and then pay to have them brought back to KW. Friends of mine found this out the expensive way. Fortunately they were/are ACTUALLY TOW TRUCK drivers themselves so they knew the ‘secret handshake’ and got off a bit easier in the wallet.

Keep in mind you can get a dui on a bicycle, golf cart and a scooter! On foot you just get a drunk in public.....:D

Uber sounds like the best for the race days. May just rent scooters for Saturday to tour around and see the sites. Thanks

I haven't been down there for a few yrs but the last time I was down I don't think they wouldn't allow uber on the island.

sonicss42 09-15-2018 07:31 PM

FYI. Uber is now in Key West.

Uber is in the Keys, we used them in Marathon and Key West last month.

we plan on parking our car and using Uber and also renting bikes for the **** of it for the weekend during the races since we can lock them up at the hotel.

Every year I've been there (last 5-6 before last year...) I've always rented a scooter an cruised all over. I never got a ticket or had a parking issue ??? 7-10 days each year.

first year I tried to walk everywhere. :hitfan: bad idea for this fatboy... the scooter makes it alot more enjoyable.

Have driven an Escalade ext, crewcab long bed dually, and a Cadillac xts... all were a PITA to drive and park in town during race week.

2 scooters for 9 days cost me about $400 ?

VortechSS 09-17-2018 07:53 AM

Scooters are where its at... As long as you aren't running red lights or bouncing them off parked cars, no worries from the po-po. Just be sure NOT to get the nice new scooter from the rental place so they arent hassling you about small scratches when you return. Pretty common for "someone" to jam theirs in next to yours in a scooter parking area. (They get tight)

Ok now where does the poker run stop for lunch this year, Heard Gilberts but can't seem to find anything on FPC site that tells me. Trying to get to the lunch stop in time to see them. Thanks

I don't think Gilbert's docks are back in working order for a large group yet. Last year they had 3 available lunch options. We did the Faro Blanco option in Marathon.

You are correct Cash. The docks at Gilberts are still busted up somewhat and cant handle the rafting

Went there for lobster season when you let us keep the boat for the night, place was pretty good and a nice spot to check out I thought.

Okay so what is the cost to watch the races and get in to the pits. Tried the SBI site and there is nothing that tells me what they charge. Not that it matters just would help to know how much cash I need.

Thanks

It was $20 a person per day to get out on the seawall last year. You just walked right thru the pits. You could also pay one fee for all of the days but I don't remember what that was. Since we flew out Saturday, we just paid each day for Wednesday and Friday. Drinks and food once out on the sea wall were very reasonably priced and plenty of porta-potties..

Allrisks 10-30-2018 08:20 AM

Thanks figured it can't be that bad. Similar to what it was 20 years ago when I last went.

Man, I wish my insurance premiums were similar to what they were 20 years ago ...........

Allrisks 10-30-2018 11:44 AM

Yeah and I wish my car insurance was as cheap as you pay in Quebec. With the commission I get paid for selling a policy it has taken me 20 years to afford to go back to Key West.

Newsflash ........... Our women are cheaper too !!! :party-smiley-048:

Allrisks 10-30-2018 12:13 PM

Most ladies I have seen from Quebec dress to impress and look like they are HIGH MAINTENANCE so not sure what type of ladies you know. LOL

Excess 10-30-2018 12:17 PM

The beauty of Quebec women is that they know how to make themselves look like champagne.... on a beer budget. Ontario women just drink beer LOL
