So I searched for info to back up what I was saying about the NMMA testing and their standards / stamped FC - W. . I found their manual for the FC - W

When I bent a rod in my 496 MAG at 400 hours, I obviously had to have my engine rebuilt. I asked the builder how the bearings and cylinder walls looked. He said the engine looked like new inside with the exception of the bent rod. All I ever used was Mobile 1 15W50 after the initial break-in on the Merc oil that came from the factory. Oil changed at 25 hours or less.

Thanks for all the advice and I have used synthetic oils in all our land vehicles for 20+ years. Just got back into I/O power from outboards and now have a 496-MAG-HO. I have found Mobile 1 is offered in the 15W50 and Racing Mobile 1 15W50 spec. I presume just use the Mobile 1 15W50? Also I have used WIX filters mainly over the years... what brand along with part number is recommended?

Thanks again

Valvoline VR-1, ran it in everything to include the 5.0/305 two barrel carb monster, the 454/330 hp motors, 454 Mags, HP 525 SC's, Hp500 carb motors, and now in the 525 EFI's, change on a 25/30 hr cycle for close to three and a half decades now. I have never had an issue, the few motors that I have had torn down for routine service have never shown any abnormal wear. Real stout additive package aimed at protection and wear. Can be had in both regular dino and now a pure synthetic version for those so inclined. Easy to find and reasonably priced. My 525's are out for service now, we shall see how they look soon.

Mercury OEM 802885Q cross to WIX 51086 per WIX site. Looks like a plan to me so far

BUP,

Any suggestions on a zinc / phos additive that could be added to diesel oil for a deleted truck? No DPF filter to damage and less of a soot concern- off-road use only of course.
Thx
Rick
