Default 400R and Merc CNC 5 blade cleaver

Hey,

I hope all are well

I managed 89 mph this summer with my Phantom 25 1984 model. 400R. 7,060 rpms. This with all vent hulls open. We will close them to see if we can get the slip down fx 1% and get 90 mph.

I am hitting the rev limiter, and consider to by a 5 blade 26/27 CNC cleaver from Mercury. I read that a Bullet bass boat with a 300R managed 107 mph with a CNC and 103 with the Max5.

The issue is that I have to buy to try... So the question is if the CNC can do the trick.

Cheers, Toffen

Toffen for what it’s worth that’s about the difference in speed I see between my Max 5 and Merc CNC cleavers on my 308 Skater.

Thanks ! Do you run the propshaft at the same height, or higher. I am running 2 inches above the bottom, but I can not get it higher due to the jackplate Cheeers, Toffen

Best of luck bustin 90 Toffen. I'm looking for something like your Phantom I can run a single O/B on stateside. Engineermike I admire your effort and applaud your results on your twin to single conversion. Now if I could just swing 35k for re-rig and purchase of a 400R I would keep my Talon.

Received this from Merc Racing:

Toffen, Always happy to answer your questions, it sounds like your Phantom is getting dialed in! At 89 mph you are getting a very impressive 6.8% slip. The Max5 and the CNC do run equal in terms of pitch, so I think you are right in considering a 26 pitch CNC to get you off of the rev limiter. If you can swing the 26 up to 7000 rpm, you will see around 94 mph, thanks to the CNC having about 4.5% slip. If the 26 drops you down to 6900 rpm, expect to be going 92 mph. As for rake, it is a bit tricky. We have had some luck with V-bottoms running 15 degree rake to keep the ride flat at top speeds, but I can’t say for sure with your set up. Thank you for the great information!

So most likely I will go for a 26 pitch 18 degree rake.

Cheeers Toffen

Toffen, I have been on this board longer than I care to admit. I dont post much, but when I see your name posting I always read it! I've followed all your adventures with your beloved Phantom! Keep up the good work! My wifes father is from Mondal. I think thats the name of the town in Norway. He came over here when he was 20 years old. A long time ago. My wife and I always say a trip to Norway is on our bucket list!

Thanks so much for nice words. I have many times thought of buying a new boat, but everyone here tells me you need to keep it. Its one of a kind. A classic offshore racer. Phantom is not foremost known as a fast boat, but as an amazing offshore hull for its size. It has all the "pro" stuff there with bow tank, bellytank, foottrottle, trim on wheel. etc. So I have invested more than buying a new boat would cost I am sure... But it's been an amazing journey - and the new propellers available gives this hull a speed unheard of before with same power. There are "Phantom 25s" out there in kevlar made now, but the originals ran 75 mph with twin XR2's

Kristiansand where we do the top speed runs are the closest city to Mandal. Approx 1 hour with a car, with a Phantom on a sunny day approx 35 mins. Hoho. I live close to Kristiansand, so if you come to Norway, you are more than welcome for a ride to see the inshore and offshore scenery here. Just amazing.

So the question is now; is potentially 3-4 mph worth the cost of USD 5,000 pluss VAT. Ha ha, ofcourse
