Yes an 500-600 HP I/O can be very reliable with the correct drive. However a 400HP O/B weigh less than 1/2 of the I/O engine and drive and costs about 1/2. It takes an I/O setup 1,200 total HP to make a 36 cat run 120 mph. The O/B cats run that fast with 800 total HP. I am personally a big fan of the new O/B cats. I applaud Donzi for a bold design and wish them the best.

These guys have been getting 2500-3000 hours out of the SC 550HP LS motor and soon the new direct inject LT-4 GenV LS will be out that is in the 650HP range. Seems to me that is pretty reliable HP and if they matted it up to something like a IMCO SCX (anything non-bravo), you would have a very reliable package.

I have said it before the only reason OB are more reliable is Merc has not put any engineering into that range of power. They have decided to move to OB for it.

Again I don't run a performance boat company but for the boats in the 30-35 foot range seems Fountain/ DONZI/ Baja or Velocity could offer both a OB and a I/O version and maybe pick up some sales.

Not everyone can afford a 500K plus custom built boat, whatever it is (CC, V, or Cat).

The best thing is it does seem there are more options at this point.
I would disagree that merc didnt put any engineering into bigger power. The 860 is a nice piece of equipment but the price of the package is pretty Steep! The 860 will run for a long time but again the price is Steep!

A 400 OB is much cheaper and lighter than a 502 Mag with a transom assembly and XR drive on it. The time to rig a boat with outboards is much faster than a I/O. So if your talking about keeping cost down on boats you need to look at the engine package price. That is why you can buy a mid 30' cat with 400 hp outboards that runs 120 mph for under 400k new.
I'm not saying that is cheap but if you put in a pair of I/O's in a mid 30' cat to run those speeds you'd need 700hp each bigger drives, more rigging, alot more money and maintenance. To build that same boat to go the same speed with I/O's you'd be talking $550k+

It will be interesting to see if Merc can make a 500hp ish outboard reliable like the 400. If they do and there still half the weight of a I/O package then that will be a tough package to beat IMO.

The new Mercury 4 stroke platform V8 outboard 300R is a V8 4.6L and weighs the same as a 2 stroke 3L (300XS) from Mercury and lighter than the 400R. Simply amazing. Now throw a blower on that 4.6 and you are easily 500HP and probably a lot more. Keep in mind the 400R outboard is only a blown a 2.6L inline 6. My guess now the issue is the current lower unit may not handle the power. Be ready big power is
coming I am sure of it.

I switched back to O/B a few years ago. Tired of wrenching on boats. Now I simply start it and go boating.

So I know the whole story. Let's see what people think at Miami. If it works, I will tell you why. If it doesn't work, I know that too.
Suppose to test out at 135

I saw the 41 Donzi, quad 400 boat today at the Palm Beach show. 1st it is huge, absolutely dwarfed the 32 Fountain cat next to it. Looked good but at $825,000 it is going to be a small buyers pool. The 32 Fountain for 299K seems like it will be way more marketable.

Outboards may be fun and all but nothing gets the panties dropping like the sound of some rumbling BBC's.

Wow, I guess my expectations are really out of line. $826K just seems so far fetched to me for this boat. I thought at $650K-$700K list might sell a few. How much is the new DW 43?
