Places that do chrome

I have a few things that I would like to re-chrome . I`m getting quotes from $50-150 per piece!

Anyone have a place that`s reasonable or is this the norm now?

Al's polishing shop in Ohio. I live in Maryland and have been using them for years.

Unfortunately this is the norm now. Advanced playing in Nashville is the best around you will pay for it but it will be perfect. We have used them in several car builds

Thats not bad these day... All the plating stuff has been hot so hard by regulations/epa stuff the rices have gpne thru the roof

VoodooRob 01-23-2019 06:34 AM

Thats the average price for a good process. Copper, Nickel, & Chrome 5 layer total will get a brilliant finish. Cheaper can be done but will flake much sooner like the cleats in your pic.

Going rates, I had a few pieces chromed almost 9 years ago, and that was the price then.... good luck

That's actually cheap from what i've found around my house in Chicago/Ohare!

Al's is pretty good they are just a few miles from me and those prices are certainly within line, 100-150 each range. Theres actually a lot of finish work in older worn pieces. I have literally had hundreds possibly thousands of pieces chromed and the best i have used was Fini Finish up in Detroit but i dont believe they are still around.

Speedracer29 01-23-2019 06:50 PM

Website is still up and they were still plating a couple years ago when I had some saddlebag latches done. I’ll look next time I get north of 8 Mile.

Dan, those prices actually seem pretty good, I have a lot of chrome work done each year with the classic cars we restore and I can tell you from what I see that's not bad!
As said a few posts back the EPA has killed the plating industry, and forced the remaining venders to raise pricing to stay compliant..

phragle 01-23-2019 09:15 PM

a few years ago Als wanted close to 600 to do a zero effort throttle shifter for a single......

Al's charged me $400.00 for all of these pieces for my 66 Donzi last year.

Best part I like about them is you send them the stuff and they send it back to you with a bill in the box. Now that's trust.

There`s no alternative correct? The powdercoating chrome doen`t look so nice that I`ve seen.
Not sure if they were not done correctly (probably not like everything else) but these pieces were peeling and bubbling after a year.
I`d rather not pay an arm and a leg for chrome only to have it peel again shortly.

My other option may be to polish and clearcoat .

How about an SS cleat
Just the first one I saw

I've used this shop in St Louis to chrome my Thru-Hull fittings, the price was fair with quality work.

no real alternative thats very durable or UV stable. If those are zinc cast there will be no polishing and clear coating them either.

Burnt down but they have a new facility that they are getting ready. So don't know if be reasonable turn around.

S&H Chrome plating in Nashville,Tn has done many parts for me varying from race quad parts to wheels and other items from my show only Corvettes. Great work and quick turn around always.

Have a set of new Mercruiser valve covers, they look nice, Can they be chromed "more" or does the process have to take place at the same time.?

If I'm not mistaken, it all has to be done at the same time. I used Custom Chrome in Grafton, Ohio for quite a few projects, you had to specify "standard" or "show" chrome when dropping parts off.
Hope this helps.

open87 12-20-2019 07:33 AM

That is what I thought.. Thanks man.

Yes different layers and amount of layers affect the outcome and price. Also the prep and polish below the surface affect the mirror shine. Wheelchair parts are splashed in nickel and sent out the door vs some motorcycle or car show parts that can have 7 total layers of copper/nickel/chrome. Thats why when getting quotes you have to compare apples to apples.
