School me on Nor-tech's

Been browsing boats as I always do seeing what's out there and up comes this 2000 38v nor-tech in the classifieds...I have seen limited 39's for sale but this is the first 38 I have seen and can't find another one...found a thread talking about not recommending a pre 02-03 Nor-tech..is there a reason for that?? Not up on the Nor-tech info whatsoever and I always thought they would be so far out of my price range I shouldn't even look however I have been seeing that may not be the case....so what's up with a 38 NT?? Good boat? Nightmare? Rough water ride, cabin size, etc?

Is it possible this is actually a 39 that was fat fingered?? lol or are the 2 not able to be mistaken for one another??

Thanks guys!!

Wildman_grafix 03-18-2019 05:23 PM

Lol seen the same boat and had questions as well.

BBYSTWY 03-18-2019 05:24 PM

Glad I'm not the only one!! hahah I did look on NADA and the only 2000 model year nor-tech they list is a 38 v so it at least exists to them!! lol

Knot 4 Me 03-19-2019 06:56 AM

39 wasn't released until mid-2000's. I was on what I believe to be the first one at the Miami boat show in '05.

I think there was a thread or some posts about it a while ago if you really dig.

39 Nortech is a totally new design. New bottom design, new deck, new cockpit, etc...... The 39 Nortechs were very fast with stock Mercury 525's, and would run around 90.

thisistank 03-19-2019 01:44 PM

I was always told the 38 NT is a straight bottom Top Gun blocked for the baby steps, with styling ques from the deck as well.

delsol 03-20-2019 08:23 AM

I was told the bottom was from a 35 Cig -- so could be a blocked 38 mold... then the steps were added.

My buddy has the old race boat with 700's and arnesons, runs in the mid 90's and has never really been set up 100%. rides well in Lake Erie...It is a solid boat

Griff 03-21-2019 01:31 AM

35 Cig Cafe bottom with steps and integrated swim platform added is what I have been told.
I have seen about 6-8 different 38 NT's for sale over the years and always liked the looks of them. Classic lines with a deep freeboard and good cabin height.
I have never really heard anything negative about them and from what I have seen, they run about 80 with 500's.

BBYSTWY 03-21-2019 06:55 AM

Awesome..thanks for the feedback guys!!

You guys are probably right since the bussle makes 38' If you compare side by side a 38 NT and a 38 Gun or Café they are basically twins in regards to the styling and lines and the strakes are identical.
I always liked the looks of the 38 NT. Clean lines, aggressive stance, never heard anything bad about how they run.

So I'm assuming its the small "steps" and maybe lighter lay up that make them so much faster in comparison to a straight bottom gun? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought guns with 500's run around 65-70 correct? From what I can find his claims of 79 with out of the box props seem pretty accurate...Would those suttle changes to the bottom net 10 MPH??

500EFI café is around 73 MPH. Gun is a more efficient hull so 74/75. steps and lighter layup 79? I don't think he's exaggerating, no.

BBYSTWY 03-21-2019 11:07 AM

I gotcha...I would have to think with some prop work it could easily be a low 80's boat then??

hogie roll 03-21-2019 02:32 PM

Did they use wood?

My impression is NT has good quality and rigging?

BBYSTWY 03-21-2019 02:37 PM

I'm not sure back in those days(2000) I would assume in the 39's they didn't but this being a 2000 38 I'm not sure....Like I said can't find much out there on them...gonna do some more digging

Get ahold of Terry Sobo. He's very upfront and open about all things Nor-Tech including their history and previous boats.

BBYSTWY 03-23-2019 07:03 AM

Does he work at nor-tech I take it?? I will def try to find him and get ahold of him thanks!!

uluru 03-23-2019 10:55 AM

Now MTI

BBYSTWY 03-23-2019 11:10 AM

Wait what?? Are you saying MTI owns Nor-tech or Terry works at MTI?? Little confused lol

uluru 03-23-2019 11:22 AM

I believe he recently joined MTI.

BBYSTWY 03-23-2019 11:27 AM

Gotcha...Thanks for the info!!

Griff 03-23-2019 12:17 PM

He was Director of Marketing at NorTech for 18 years and now with MTI

BBYSTWY 03-23-2019 12:31 PM

Awesome thanks!!

thisistank 03-23-2019 05:04 PM

Terry is back at nortech. He’s on here as salesmanship I believe. I shot him a text and told him he’s being talked about here :D

I owned and raced the third NT 380 Superfast ever made, back when Trond and Nils rigged the boats themselves. Our boat ran 88-90 mph with HP 500 carbs and 3 blade 29” Mirage Plus props. Great rough water boat. Light layup with no cabin. The 38 for sale now I believe was once owned by Steve Miklos of SunPrint SVL fame. That boat was heavier than the others but did run 80 with the 500 EFI’s.

Tom A. 03-24-2019 10:14 AM

To me that seems like a great deal on a quality boat.

Survey, survey, survey..... if it comes back good, go for it.

BBYSTWY 03-24-2019 10:34 AM

That's what I was thinking...my biggest hurdle now is can I afford 2 boat payments until my Nordic sells hahaha...trying to work out those details now

Any thoughts on financing better than any others?? I talked to Jody from diverse offerings and when I get some more ducks in a row he seems like a good person to deal with...any others I should be lookin at?

Thanks guys!!

We used Lightstream..... If you have strong credit, this is the best option we have found. Best of luck.

I'm sure you have heard it before but for financing a Credit union is your best bet. They have WAAAY more lenient guidelines than specialized marine finance places. Zero hoops to jump through. Couple pay stubs and back taxes..done! Call around for one that does boats not all of them list them and they can fall under RV loans at some places. You don't need to be a member to get this info and can join if you are approved. Some have age restrictions but what I found is sometimes, they will make exceptions if you can PROVE the boat books out high enough. What a lot of places do is go to NADA, check some boxes (not knowing boats) and come up with a number. For instance, one of the choices for a trailer is if it has 1,2 or 3 axles. If you check "3" for instance, you have to add the value it has listed 3 times because the number is a number for "each" axle. Engines are another whole story because some only have the "original equipment" or "base" engines which could be a little 525 with Bravos and does not account for full blown Sterlings and 6's or whatever... I think you see where I'm going with this.

Sweet baby jesus that's nice!
