When Building a Boat
My question is how payments to the builder are handled? What do most people give for a down payment and then what payments are made during construction.
|
I Believe Skater Is 4 Payments, Thats What I Was Told When I Was Looking At Building A 368.
|
Some require it up front with no guarantees of when or if you’ll ever take delivery. :food-smiley-007: |
Usually 3 or 4 payments at various milestones. I've seen: 30% at commission, 30% when hull is complete, 30% when motors go in, 10% at delivery.
|
I am building a new Nor-Tech 390 Sport now. Small deposit for the build slot, 1/3 when it goes in the mold, 1/3 at rigging balance on delivery.

Thank you, I hope to look at a CC next week and I'll see what they'll want.

Have a 340 Sport for sale, just sayin'.......LOL |
Thanks, unfortunately my budget is under $200 with a trailer and all the newer NT are over that, they are a beautiful boat. My garage is 40' deep and I think I'll be limited to around 32' or 33' with the trailer.
|
What brands are you checking out? I was looking in that same range length and price and was looking at 30-32 concept or 32 Sunsation, which is actually out of my price range but so nice. I would love a Nortech but out of range for me as well.
|
Mine was 25% to secure contract, 25% when out of mold, 25% when motors arrive, 25% on delivery. I don't know how you would go about financing under these terms? Will a bank loan you the full amount on a boat that is not built yet?

I'm hoping to test drive a Renegade, Concept and Sunsation next week, I have to drive to FL from MA to trailer home my daughter's race sailboat. The Sunsation is very nice, but more expensive, I didn't look at them because I didn't like their rear seats, but they have come out with a very nice rear seat this year. I'm trying to reach someone at Performance Boat Center in FL to see if they have one to test drive. The smallest Statement I like is a 35' and I don't think it will fit in my barn, but again, a very nice boat.

When I was working with Active Thunder as a Factory Rep, it was roughly 30/30/30/10; which would adjust a bit when the trigger for major components like powerplants had to be pulled. Building new now is different with outboards in short supply and long lead times in many cases. As such, you may need to pick and earmark your power FIRST, or perhaps even commission the boat and pick the power later based on what's available. JW Davis of Davis Watersports and Davis 4x4 in Richmond, VA has his 3rd, new Sunsation 32CCX on order, and it should be done any day now. His last two sold before he could even sea trial them himself. https://www.davisautosales.com/windo...leasure%20Boat He has this used 2017, but it has been under contract for a while, yet still hasn't closed. I think the boat is in Florida at the moment. https://www.davisautosales.com/windo...ce%20Powerboat He also has this almost new Glasstream, which I've been on and it's SICK fast. https://www.davisautosales.com/windo...20XL%20Verados |
Thanks for the offer Cash, I'm trying to test drive a Renegade in Cape Coral on Tuesday and then over to the east coast to get my daughter's boat and try the Sunsation and the Concept.

Thank you for the links, but seating in a CC is important and some boats just don't have seats that I would want to ride in. If you go to Performance Boat Center's site and look at the new 32 that sold with the new rear seating, anyone that has purchased one with the old rear seats will not be happy. The new seats are very nice and your friends would enjoy riding in it. The Glasstream is nice and more affordable with twins, but their seating is not very good, the rear and in front of the console.
One of the best for seating was the Powerplay that was built a few years ago, but you don't see them anymore. |
I've always wondered, how can a boat manufacturer ever go broke? They never use their own money because buyers always pay in advance.....! I bet your high end car manufacturers don't make you pay so much up front. I know many of these manufacturers are not big volume operations and are building custom or semi-custom boats but does anyone have experience with the biggest manufacturers like Sea Ray or maybe Formula? Surely they just take a deposit through their dealer and you pay on delivery? I know that's how the Sea Ray dealer over here operates. RR |

I think I know the Renegade and dealer, good guys over there. Again, just sayin' while you're in the Cape the NT is on the lift haha. Erik |
Erik,
Is your boat listed in the classifieds, if not, can you pm me a listing? |

Call Vernon Blanc @ Newcoast Financial, used him for the financing of my last 3 boats.
He's a straight shooter who helps find you the best option to suit your needs NOT the best deal to put the largest commission in his own pocket. Vernon can explain how builders get funded and what would be required of you throughout the process. 727-450-1160 |
Erik, That boat is stunning, but unfortunately it's out of my budget. If my daughter was getting out of college and not going in, I would love to buy it or Nascat's boat, if you still have it, both boats are beautiful. I should finance the boat and get what I want, but I've always paid cash for toys and hope to keep it that way.
Nascat, Is that 38' on an Evolution trailer or does it matter the make? |
I can’t answer that w/ 100% confidence but I’d say they are all within 1’ of one another. |
Did you check out the three manufacturers yet? How did it go?
