Another 525 Question?

'06 525 EFI's with 350 hours +/- doing the top end refresh right now. Question ??????

Would one need to replace the roller lifters??? Understand it could be a case by case deal, question is in general with the 350 hours, normal use, ran strong at last outing.

Same basic question in regard to the valves???

Talk to me.

At 350 hours, the only components I'd be reusing would be the pushrods- after close inspection.

I never am concerned of the cost of the individual components, I'm more concerned about the ultimate cost of a failure.

Hope all is well Peter !

From what I’ve heard, replace springs locks and retainers. Being an 06 you should have the arp and cometic head gasket setup. Just look at the head bolts to be sure. If it has a “plus” sign it’s the gm junk.
Give Eddie Young a call, he recommends 10 degree retainers with a stiffer spring for the 525’s since they have a pretty aggressive cam.

I don’t like opening up motors more than necessary. While I was in there I’d do all moving components.

You are quick! Had your number on my desk late today, need a conversation, I'll call you.

All is well here, motors came out early September, my guy is a little behind his promise but it will float again come spring.

Samantha says Hi! to Julie, hope to see you guys soon.

The 10-degree retainers / locks are to get more installed height out of a replacement spring. The OEM springs with 7-degree locks/retainers are installed around 1.810" which is too low for any of the replacement options. Even the Merc 525 manual recommends an installed height of 1.850". Anywhere between 1.850" and 1.875" is good.

Isky 8005A spring puts seat and open pressure right in the sweet spot at that height for this motor. Been running them the past three years. Use with Comp Cams 748-16 retainers and 612-16 locks. Install between 1.850 and 1.875.

And to answer original question, yes, replace the lifters and rockers. I used GM high performance lifters that I got from Eddie Young. Prior to that I used Johnson lifters and had three of them fail. For my rockers, I used Crower Enduro Stainless Steel Stud Mount Roller Rocker Arms 73605-16. These are maybe a bit of overkill, but they will likely outlast the engine.
