Pretty much any chain short of lamp chain will prevent a boat from rolling off the trailer.

How many pound chain do you guys use? When I bought my boat it didn’t have a safety chain. The second time I pulled the boat out of the water going up the ramp my winch unlocked and unwound. But guess what? That safety chain I added caught and it was a non event. Phew! |

I used 20k lb safety chain. Cut it to length to leave just a bit of play when hooked. When trailering I rely on ratchet straps. When I bought my boat it didn’t have a safety chain. My inexpensive solution was clear vinyl hose over my safety chain. Only part not covered were the links at each end. Got the hose at Menards.
