Adding a pad
Has anyone added a pad to their v hull or made the chines/ lifting strakes bigger . Im contemplating adding a pad for more lift an speed on a 28 pantera ???
cheers gerry |
Peter Unwin from England is adding a pad to his Coyote. He is on here once in a while but I can't remember his screen name. Has a 29OL on this side of the pond he put a carbon stabilizing "tail rudder" on it. Does a lot of out of the box ideas, he has also added a lifting wing to the front of the Coyote.

I also believe the guy who set out to have the worlds fastest 22 Donzi went to a pad. I believe there are some write ups and videos around here (OSO) ofthem somewhere,
edit in. Here is his U Tube Page Björn Carapi https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJ5...=dd&shelf_id=0 |
I’m adding a pad to my 25’ Checkmate. |
Thinking about doing a notch , no pad on my 31 since I am going to a SSM V. Thinking 8" up and 8" deep. Would be a pretty forward task for me since I am just about done gutting. My thinking was to build a plug with a 24 degree and that 8" x8" dimension and build part, cut out the hull and bond together with the new stringers.

Go for it! Especially if you like your Pantera. I have seen catamaran sponsons modified with a flat running surface.

there should already be a pad on the mate
|
Too much vee to do what I want it to.

Check out the pad on a tuff. Perfectly flat aside from a chine down its center. They fly |
If you make your pad completely flat, please let us know your results. I also have a 251, and was always curious to why they didn't make the pad completely flat, like on the Checkmate Eluder I grew up on. Rough water ride is my guess.

Superboat on Long Island added steps years ago! I believe engine builder Rich Zul owned boat?
|
Open87 I put a notch in my 1985 cigarette flat a number of years ago as I put ssm5 drives on as well . I have a thread in the cigarette forum believe it or not called " how to put notch in a flat deck " give it look it might shead some insight as to how much work it is . But for
me it was worth it . Cheers Rick G. |
Will do and you are correct.
Flat pad = speed but pounding in rough water. The width of the pad has a huge effect on this. I will keep my narrow (5 1/2") to keep the sea keeping abilities while still retaining the flat pad. Downside is the narrower they are the harder it is to balance/keep the boat on the pad at speed. Im OK w/that though as I much prefer a boat that rewards driver iunput. I grew up flying pad bottom, O/B powered vees. Not much better. Heres a 17' Hydrostream Vector w/a workbench OMC @ 101.https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5ac86a3cba.jpg

Will Smith's 29 Phantom started life as a 27/28 Magnum ( basically same bottom as 28 Pantera/Cig , ect.). His pad/strake design provided additional speed without hurting rough water performance, as this became a proven race winner.

Always looking for more speed and fuel economy i recently decided to add to the width of the pad using Iroko which i pre-finished with epoxy then bonded on to the hull, the new addition has 1/2" of rocker built into the rear over the last 3ft this is giving lots more lift to the point where i am having to make 1" spacers for the drives as i am running out of prop grip. |

Cool stuff Pete.
And forgive me for saying it was a coyote on the first page :) |
Wow!!! Peter, you are a hell of a engineer. Very cool stuff |
Gorgeous. Great job on the pad/results. Cudos also for thinking to cool the fuel. Well done. |
Wow!! That is some seriuos brain power !
|
Welcome back, Peter! I miss reading your build threads on both the Hunton and the Outerlimits!

How many miles an hour faster are we saying this will allow a boat to go? I have a formula 311 and wonder how much this would benefit me, yet I don’t really want to compromise the ride too much as it does just go cut through the chop. Curious of the thoughts. |
