Chris Cat Owners......

Just wondering if any of you know of an outboard setup Chris Cat??? I have personally never seen one but just recently stumbled across one that is set up for 4 outboards!!! It must be ax x-race boat or something cause there is only the driver and pass seats and no room for anyone else! I'm sure the back can be converted for a back bench but it would take some work. And i think the dealfor this size cat is sweet but i'm sorta leary about spending money for 4 outboards!!!! Maybe convert it to a triple setup?
Anyway my question is how good are they with outboards?
The transome is solid so i guess cutting it up for a set of inboards may just be easier?? sell all the gill outboard brackets to offset some costs??
And what kind of speeds has anyone seen with outboard setups??
Thanks :)

There is only ONE MAN to answer your questions on the Chris Cat and that is T2x! Considering he and his best friend George Lindner built them, they would be most knowledgeable in set ups..

If thats the case,

My firend went from a 28 older model scarab to a 26 AO and he said it beat him up. Said he didn't dare take it out in Galveston Bay with anything over 2's.

My question is,

I know we question wave size, but whats the roughest water the 31 can handle comfortably without bangin' the people up too much in the boat? Head on, quartering waves etc, etc,

Thanks,
Shawn

Hey Shawn... I hope that it is going well, recovering here, they are trying to get me to go into surgery to repair my ACL :(

The difference between the chris and the 26AO is huge the chris is a rough water boat, the 26AO is built more like a west coast lake boat than a rough water cat. Now the 31 on the other hand is a great east coast style rough water boat. Also the 31 is basically a Chris.

Wally,
I use to own a Chris Cat with 3 - 2.4 efi Bridgeports. Except for the fact the motors were fixed (no power trim), it was a great boat. I’m bias though; I prefer clamp-on’s to sterndrives.

Wally 11-01-2002 10:05 AM

The cat in question is a 38'er i believe... :)

29scarab 11-01-2002 10:20 AM

Coddington,

I wondered what was going on with you!! Hope all is well! Good luck on the surgey!!

As far as the 31 goes, I would still like to hear some feed back on the ride in the rough stuff!

Coddigtion 11-01-2002 10:24 AM

Thanks man, I am just getting back to normal, if there is such a think I am calling my PT Queen of Darkness right now. She is my ex  :D She is making me ride a bike either stationary or a road bike 10-20 miles per day, and it HURTS my knee.

I know that a 31 rocks in the rough stuff... Been there and done that more than once, it has been a couple of years tough.

29scarab 11-01-2002 10:35 AM

Whats the story on Scott with AO?? Jail????

Have you heard anything?

T2x 11-01-2002 11:20 AM

Wally:

There is no "38 er" Chris Cat. They only came in the 30 foot length, and were a direct evolution of the Shadow Cat which George and I created. George updated the Shadow design with wider sponsons and a modified running surface in producing the Chris design.

We(through our later company Conquest Marine, with Ken Adams) also built a 37' running plug for Chris Craft, and that boat is currently at Kurt's Marine in Brick, New Jersey........but no "38ers".

The 30 foot Shadows and Chris Cats were the best running rough water race boats at that size in history..................including vee bottoms, and have been compared to 35-36' Cigarettes in that regard

Four outboards will give you mind blowing acceleration and about 110 top end.......three 2.5's will give you about 100, if the boat is sound and has not gained weight over the years. I would not convert it to inboards as the boat was probably not laid up for them originally, and would need extensive stringer work. If you're dead set on I/B's buy an existing I/B hull.

37 Chris Cat? Running Plug? Only 1? A picture of that would really be cool. Does it basically look just like a stretched 30? What new and improved ideas went into the 37?

Ron P 11-01-2002 11:45 AM

Was that the 37 that ran under the Maxon name? I'm not too sure if it is still at Kurts.

Didn't Timmy C sell about 7 37s under the Maxon label?

T2x 11-01-2002 11:56 AM

Shipwrecked:

The 37 was supposed to run only a few times as a test cell to validate the design before a mold was made. However, as was so typical of Chris Craft in those days, the boat wound up being raced by Tim Ciasulli and Harry Wellman in 1985, in spite of the fact that it had no business on a race course. In its first race it led all other open boats for the first lap....then broke down. It was built lightly and not of Marine grade materials.....yet it still exists today as a pleasure boat.....kudos to master craftsman, Ken Adams.....a true genius even with exterior plywood.

It is not a "stretched 30".....in that it sports a single step and different aerodynamics. However, it was also not a match for the later Conquest hulls, either, in that it is more "boxy" and not quite as fast. The hull also had too much forward lift and would need slight modifications before a mold was made. It would have made a heck of a boat....But sadly CC was getting out of cats and racing as it hit the water.

Ron:

no, no ,no , no...................The "Maxons" were 30 foot Chris cats with five foot "beaks" added on to the pickle forks (to make them/it legal for open class).....I don't know how many of these Timmy made, but I only know of one.

This/these were NOT the 37 Chris Cat........

I saw the 37 in Clear Lake . Scott had just got through putting it on a trailer when I was pulling up to take mine out of the water. It was a while back though.

It was a good looking ride! One big SON OF A B***H!!

Nice paint and big motors!!

Fast Shafts 11-01-2002 02:17 PM

T2X,
Why did the Maxon Cat have no business being on the race course? Was it a design problem or a construction problem-you eluded to the boat being built with inferior products (non marine plywood) is this why? Not trying to start any-crap, just trying to learn.
Thanks!
Bob G.

T2x 11-01-2002 02:40 PM

The 37 Chris Cat....not the Maxon Cat......was a PLUG....intended to have a mold made from it after a few test runs....It was never meant to race or even exist after the mold was made....Normally a plug was all but destroyed as the mold was pulled.

In fact the deck was not the intended design shape but merely a covering to allow for the testing.

This whole Maxon reference is confusing.................

Triple Engine Cat

If you're in the market for a triple engine rough water cat, check out our 30' AeroTek in the classifieds under "MISC CATS". I know there's been a lot of AeroTek bashing on this board but those comments are about incidents several years after our 1989 boat was made and I believe they're about V-bottoms, not Cats.

It's great in rough water, I've personally slept in the cabin running 70 mph thru storms (and I mean slept, not passed out!). The boat has been completely rerigged, has a new floor, new interior, new paint, etc. We're selling it because we got a 28' Skater. The Aerotek is a party boat while the Skater is a go-fast, no frills boat.

Wally,
I own a 1985 30' Chris Cat, and I like it a lot, The only place that I would go from here would be a Skater. The Skaters are a bit out of my budget, so this makes me like my CC even more.

It is my understanding from reading some of old posts, that the Chris Cat ran better with inboards (due to wider sponsons) and the Shadow Cat ran better with outboards (due to more narrow sponsons),

There arent many Chris Cats out there because thay did not make that many. Is the Chris Cat a boat that you are seriously seeking or did you just happen to run across this one. Ther is also a yellow one in the yacht trader, with a radar arch.

Is this the boat you are looking at?

I want to know if cat girl is married ? if you are, he is one lucky man, Craig

That is the exact boat!!! Do you know anything about it??? Any info would help greatly! :D

And i stand corrected....it is a 30' boat.....it just seams like a hughe monster sitting on the trailer! It dwarfs my old Scarab bigtime! Or maybe its because its in some cramped shop right now...either way its a coold boat! :D

Chris Cat

Wally,
I dont really know anything on this perticular boat. Their asking price seems just a tad high for an 85 with a race setup and no cabin. If the trailer is nice, it might be worth that. I would try to get it for about 4 to 5K less. Just my .02. I would also have a survey done on it, for certian if it has been raced.

If you want to see some pics of other CC's,I have some Pics of my Chris Cat in the members photo galleries. Just do a search in that section on "Flashback" and it should bring them up.

Later,
Flasback

Hey jp2snowman, nice Chris Cat. Is that the same boat that was owned by John Estes and a small article on it, in the Hot Boat magazine a few years back? If so, I thought John had gone through the original 420's and beefed them up to aroung 500hp.
