cabins, does anybody really use them?
ive decided to trade in my boat for, what else bigger and faster cig... but lately in the new boat decision process cabin ammenities (head fridge ac micro/cooktop)have been, PLEASE forgive me, steering away from cigarette:eek: !
a 38 fountain sc w/ ac would be nice for nights at PIB (or a top gun and a nice hotel room:D !) but its to slow for poker runs and you have to wait for the bridge by shooters to go up a donzi 33 has a nice cabin and has the speed but its just not a cig! so are these amenities worth not owning the one and only? LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!! |
I can only speak for myself but after owning another boat with a stove, head ect... I can say I never used that stuff. I barely use the Cover Girl cabin on the Cig. The more stuff you have in the cabin the more there is to break. It all depends what type of boating you do I guess.My.02

I must be getting old.........Those hotel rooms after a long day in the sun sure are nice !!!!
Pass on a cig for a cook-top ?? Ya Nuts ?????:D |
that donzi is still an Aronow boat.... maybe i said that because i love donzi's.....
|
I wouldn't let the cabin swing the decision one way or another...Get what you really want. How often do you use your current cabin...what would you lose by moving up?
|
Hell yes I use mine!
To me there's nothing quite as nice as waking up in a nice quiet cove with the sun coming up and the mist still on the water. Hotel rooms are nice, but I prefer to find a nice secluded cove, drop anchor, have a few cold ones and a sandwich from the fridge, and then wake up the next morning - already on the water and ready to go! I wish I could afford a go-fast with MORE cabin!
To each his own. Some folks pefer to be day-boaters. Nothing wrong with that! |
i store life jackets in my cabin. that's about all i use it for.
|
Ted,
We used the cabin on the Cafe Racer this summer for a 3 day weekend...slept on it and everything...but of course there is no fridge or stove. The enclosed head is a nice feature and we made sure that we stayed at places that had shower facilities. Stay with Cigarette...you'll be happier in the long run because of the ride...not the amenities. |
I used my cabin to sell the wife on the boat. A newer boat with a Covergirl cabin would be fine with me.

All I use is the enclosed head and the fridge, after several trips to the fridge I need to use the head :D Never sleep on it anymore.
|
I use my cabin always in my 40' Hawk....it has air and heat lots of room in width but not much head room....stayed over 30 nights this past summer in it....nothing neater than sleeping in a boat during a large storm.....use the marinas showers and restaurants....life is good.....Fred

We do a lot of exploring on Chesapeake Bay, and to us the cabin is one of the best parts of our 38' Formula. We went so far as to add hot water, A/C and generator so we're completely self-sufficient if we have to be. It's all in the way you use your boat.
|
We use our cabin every weekend. You don't need to have a cooking area. That what restuarants are for. Just make sure where you stay has shower facilities.
I'm 6 feet tall and have a 38 Flat deck Cigarette 7 foot plus V berth. Works just fine. Mark |
33 Donzi
I have been wanting that 33 Donzi for a long time!!! - I love the cabin - and it's still fast and very creature comfort in cockpit ( power dropouts - power footrests) If I had the $$$ i'd be in one right now.
Myself - I prefer to stay on my boat - especially at Put-In-Bay. I Like to keep an eye on who's walking across my swim platform/sunpad. Also if someone decides to cast out of the raft "I"!!!! want to re-tie my boat - you can wind up next to some drunken Jag-off that won't adjust your fenders or anything. I've also had to raft in the harbor, - storm kicked up the next morning-early - sailboat broke loose and was blowing right toward me - I was glad to be there to fend off the blow boat from mine. |
I'm with "Mr. Cig" as wifey. We do use the cabin, it really is nice and comfortable after a long day out. Hook up shore power, crank up the stereo, and click on the air! All set! I agree, though, wouldn't use the micro or cooking.....have cell phone and am very good at dinner reservations! It also makes anchoring at the beach more fun....but that is a TOTALLY different story  :D

Yea, sleeping, refrigerator, ice maker, and the head with shower and hot and cold water, screw the cooking stuff.

I use mine almost every other weekend. Is this what you mean?
|
Use mine only if I drink too much and quickies. Mostly just for lines and lifejackets.:p

Depends on how you boat. We use ours a lot. We stay at a local marina 10 minutes from our house and sleep on the boat. I'll admit I'd rather stay at home in the king size bed with a/c, but it's nice staying on the boat, too. I wouldn't want to pay for a hotel in that case. We travel a lot on Lake MI, and it's nice to stay on the boat. Saves us cashola that way. So we can spend more money on boat gas and more trips:)
That's the ONLY reason we'll move to another boat, more cabin room. I'll go after more speed too when we do, just cause:) But I could get more speed out of the current boat, can't add on cabin room, well, unless Mr Offshore puts that pop-up on cabin option my boat:D |
Quickies??? That must be where you got your nickname "hair trigger":D :D :D :o.
Slept on my 27 Formula a few times but with shore power and cable TV. Flip the air on...it's:cool: |

Mine's for stabbin
|
I use mine every weekend but party because I tow for two hrs. just to get to the friggin lake. Its a great place to screw and pass out:eek: :D
|
I run a 24 Outlaw (anyone who has ever been on one or owned one knows how "easy" it ISN'T to get into the cabin!!) and I probably spend more weekends on the boat in the summer than at home. The only place I boat that I don't use the cabin is LOTO.
|
We keep our boat in Grand Haven which is about two hours from home. So, when we go it's for the weekend or longer and we always stay on the boat. I think half the fun of boating is staying in the marinas and meeting people that enjoy the same hobby. The cabin amenities are very important to us, so we tried to find a boat that gave us the best combination of performance, ride and amenities. That's what works for us!
|
I just got used to peeing in a bucket or going over because other than a top gun we used to have all we had was the "sealed" porta-potty. Now we are getting a Yacheet to stay on and tie up to that even has a bidet! not that we'll use it:) It's kind of odd, but the boat was built "across the pond"
|
Just stuff to break. This summer I wiped out the stereo, the AC and the microwave on one poker run. Need a race cat.
|
I hear ya Madcow, I have trashed a few amps from running in the rough, not to mention dented and leaking beer in the cooler by the time that I get to the island:rolleyes:
|
We use our cabin all the time. When we have the kids we watch movies, play games, pop popcorn in the microwave, etc. We use it like some people use an RV.
When it's just the wife and me.........we play games:D |

Mitch, That's my version of a cabin too:D
We use the cuddy on the boat for some light storage under the seats. |
Cabins
There are few things I enjoy more than waking up at sunrise in a great cove on the water. I quick dip in the water is a spectacular way to wake up. I use my cabin many weekends to sleep on in the warm months and keep it well stocked for overnighting. I have a fridge and head and the ability to make coffee in the mornings if I want.
Mimosas early, then back to bed for a couple of hours of fun and then start the "regular" boating Saturday or Sunday. You usually have the water mostly to yourself for the first several hours too. If you don't overnight, I think you are missing one of boatings best pleasures. |
Mitch that was a good one:D
I use my cabin every weekend that I use the boat with the exception of one of our Poker Runs that we stay at the Casino in Windsor or Detroit. When we go to PIB or Kelly's it's a must! I use the microwave as a storage compartment but enjoy the rest of the stuff. |

We use our cabin allot. We lived on our boat for a full week at PIB last summer. We spent many other weekends aboard. The way I see it.... boaters up north weekend more and boaters in warmer climates boat all day and get a hotel room at night. We bought our boat to use it and all the amenities that come with it!

Our cabin isn't very big, but it is big enough for what we need. We will slip in there to change clothes, and keep our "stuff" in there. When we overnight, the only reason I go into the cabin is to sleep or stab. When we stay out with other boaters, we raft together, and mostly stay on deck. I have never been able to stay in a cabin very long, no matter what the size of the boat.
Here is a great reason to stay out. Beautiful sunrise. |

Even if we owned a 60 foot Hatteras, I don't think we would do any cooking onboard.
That is what waterfront restaurants are for. |

The cabin was one of the main reasons for buying the 38 Donzi ZX. Although I will rarely sleep on the boat I wanted an enclosed head that is usable (wife's mandate) also having the fridge and A/C will be nice. Cooking... what is that? ;)
