Al,

It is important to note here a survey is not going to uncover this issue as well. Always pull an oil sample (you can buy the kit at Napa) and have the oil analyzed.
When the report comes back you will know right where you stand with each engine. The report will tell you oil condition, if there is water in the oil (leaking header) coolant in the oil on closed cooling systems and bearing metals in the oil (crank or other parts) Make sure to take the sample from a warmed up engine. -Kevin Schulte

It's up to the buyer to do due diligence. In your case, what you should have done when purchasing the boat. Friends, relatives or not at the end of the day it's as-is.

Yes and like I said, I really don't think he is the kind of guy that would not do the maintenance.

Hey Kevin! Good advise.

How are you and Kelly doing? Haven't talked to you in ages!

Boats are pretty much a buyer beware situation so you’re on your own, and boats really really hate sitting around unused just like any other mistress.

Ive heard Brad Penn 20/50 oils turn to sludge for some reason. That may be a culprit.

But have you ever had the oil changed yourself? The first thing I check and replace on all purchases is the fluids.

that or the previous owner just trusted the marina/shop to actually change the oil and they didn't do it right and he never bothered checking....
Could be very true. Guy had a boat for 7 years (twin engine) and always had oil changed by the marina every year. Sold the boat and new owner called another local Mech to changed the oil. The local handed a bill to the new owner for 2 oil changes and ONE filter. Guy said I'm to old and by appearance (very rusty and not same as other one) the one oil filter has very been changed because you cannot get at it without removing exhaust man

Sure sorry to hear about your issue, and your honorable
