Looking grim for Florida

It is a beast of a CAT 5 storm now, winds over 175mph. Bahamas are getting wrecked (definitely a place that doesn't need this storm). Freeport (major shipping port), Grand Bahama and West End are going to be destroyed. Marsh Harbour just got the brunt of it.

Some favorites that will likely be closed for a long time...............Getting simple stuff in the Bahamas is not only expensive but usually a hassle. They have a 12% VAT tax on almost everything and if it is something big like a car, then it is 45%. So imagine the nightmare of trying to rebuild an island with limited labor talent, unobtainable supplies and crazy prices! Its not like Home Depot doesn't have it and you have to go across the street to Lowe's!

Florida appears to be getting "brushed" by the outer bands.........no landfall.

Things can be rebuilt.. Unfortunately, I am sure we will hear about loss of life before it is all over. Hoping everybody stays safe.

2 days in the eye must be hell on earth - those poor folks in Grand Bahama are really taking a beating now that this beast has stopped moving.
They are going to need lots of support next few months - and to think it could have been Fort Lauderdale getting the 185 mph winds.

At least we can leave. Where the hell can you go when you are on an island?

I have 2 neighbors that live in the Bahamas for work, come home on weekends. One guy left Nassau asap (yet co-workers stayed despite having a private jet for their use), the other family the husband stayed, wife came home. She told us that a neighbor realized they were in trouble so in the eye of the storm, got in a freaking kayak and paddled to another house that was holding up better!

I heard Nippers is gone (it was essentially a wood frame bar directly on the ocean), lots of flattened homes on Marsh Harbour. Even if your home made it, you won't want to go there for years until the rest of the island recovers. But if you had some building skills, some access to materials to import you probably could make some great money in the next couple years. Probably a cheap place to buy a hotel/marina too.

That presents so many more issues.......no power/control tower (even though USA covers their ATC anyway), is the runway damaged (likely).

There are some facebook groups trying to organize supply runs (via private boats) but that has its own issues. Can you imagine how much debris is in the water? The docks are probably unusable, definitely no fuel (or any you would want to take a chance with) and if your boat gets disabled then what? The US is actually closer to Grand Bahama island than Nassau is.

74 died in Texas during Hurricane Ike, many of them stayed on Bolivar peninsular despite many warnings that the storm surge would top the land turning it first into an island, then completely sweeping over that. Only one house survived intact and many of the bodies were washed, miles inland ending up not far from here.
Storm surge is something that should always be feared and avoided.

News showed the Bahamian prime minister asking private boats NOT to make the trip over no matter how well intended. Debris/lack of customs/organization would make it a total clusterfvck. The guy said "if a 70 ft yacht showed up full of supplies we couldn't handle it".............typical Bahamas politics.
