Port and Starboard Trivia

The actual origin of the term "port" is based on the fact that the left side of old merchant sailing ships had a loading or entry port. The right side had a steering board that hung over the side of the ship (before the invention of rudders) which is where the term starboard comes from. A handy tip for remembering which side is port, is to remember that port and left have the same number of letters. |
Interesting trivia, thank you! Many many years ago, my father taught me how to remember Port, Starboard and color..... "There's a little red port left in the bottle" ..........Kinda silly because Dad never left any port in the bottle. :) RR . |
And I always thought it was because “port wine is always left in the cellar” Nice to learn something new today. Thanks Wait...... does this mean that when people say I’m a know-it-all. They are wrong? |
That is cool history,
I still think this is much easier: Left = Left Right = Right :band::lolhit: |
how about my dads old favorite POSH means port out starboard home
|
Red right returning.
|
Not in many inland smaller lakes. IE: no ports
|
That actually came about because originally it was starboard and larboard. They sounded too similar causing confusion so they decided to go with port. This was in the 1800s |

while returning from sea this is true however if you look at the ICW it runs in a clockwise manor around the county. My river confuses folks all the time. Heading inland red is on the port side because it’s the ICW. However before the merger coming from the gulf it is red right return. |
