Many many years ago, my father taught me how to remember Port, Starboard and color.....

"There's a little red port left in the bottle"

..........Kinda silly because Dad never left any port in the bottle. :)

That actually came about because originally it was starboard and larboard. They sounded too similar causing confusion so they decided to go with port. This was in the 1800s

while returning from sea this is true however if you look at the ICW it runs in a clockwise manor around the county. My river confuses folks all the time. Heading inland red is on the port side because it’s the ICW. However before the merger coming from the gulf it is red right return.
