it is a USCG license that allows a person to operate a vessel up to 100 tons. The steps are 100, 200, 500, 1600, and AGT (any gross tons) for masters. The mates versions are basically 200, 500, 1600, then you get to 3rd, 2nd and chief in the AGT side. There’s also the National and the oicnw side of life which lets you go overseas. This is a very very simplistic breakdown and it gets wayyy more complicated. Lol

i skipped oupv which is known as a 6pack as it allows you to have up to 6 passengers. Think of most charter boats. Then there is a 25 and 50 ton also I think.

Congratulations, very nice.... Don't be cutting in to my Florida job possibilities lol. I too got mine about a year and a half ago with dreams of driving someone around after I retire in a year and a half.

You can get a 100 ton as opposed to a 25 ton just by having additional sea time recorded, Which is easy peasy. I held a 100 ton with a sailing and towing addendum for 20 years.

Started with a 25 ton but every 5 years when I Had to re update my info they bumped me up to a bigger tonnage because of my additional sea time .
I had captains working for me in the parasail business that had 100 tons that i wouldn’t trust to row a dinghy in a bathtub.

All book study. Most interesting part of the test is navigation and plotting set and drift. No hands on testing required

At least when I tested for my CDL they rode along with me. Still grossly inadequate hands on testing , being the hardest part of the test was a offset parallel parking.

No hands on testing for my combination and tanker endorsements. And most importantly how to go down a 5% grade safely and deal with a runaway truck if things start getting Hairy Canary.

Some of the best boat captains I saw were the guys running the 50 foot single engine backyard built sport fishing boats out of Pirates Cove in Manteo NC back in my days of parasailing out of there

Single engine boats backing into slips at 6 knots with a 25 knot crosswind. It was a orchestra when they all pulled into the marina around the same time.

Not it to mention them coming through Oregon Inlet with a 8 knot outgoing tide and a 10 foot swell rolling out of the East .
