TSA and Rhinda scan tool?
 

Flying out to look at a boat next month and planning to take my Rhinda scan tool with me to verify hours on run times. Has anyone done this or had problems getting through TSA with it? Only going for the weekend so planning to carry on.

I travel twice a month with whatever scan tool needed for the apps. It is best to pull it out and place it openly in the bin. Try at all costs not to have it x ray multiple times. And if all possible NOT to have it tested for a residue explosive material test.

about 8 years ago - I had my Mercury DDT scan tool in my luggage roll baggage - the TSA ran that thru and pulled my luggage bag. They had me and the bag to pull out the scan tool. They asked me what it was and needed to run it back thru the X ray. They did this twice for a total of 3 X rays. Then they did one swabbed explosive test after all this. All that passed so they gave everything back to me.

Short story the darn scan tool never operated correctly after that. And of course they questioned me what it was and the cables and cartridges. They told me " TSA has to make sure its not some detonating device " TSA said they never seen a tool like that so they had to follow protocol. Keep in mind I am in Dallas and this is a huge area for gun and drug runners to the North.

Also I never have had another issue since then and IMO its because I pull out the scan tools placed openly on display in the bin. Also I do carry my marine LIC and my marine dealership LIC plus biz cards and if I am teaching marine classes I have that credential with me as well.
I put all that in the bin with the scan tool and like I said have not had an issue since then..

It shouldn't be a problem. I'd take it in the case, so it doesn't look random. Just take it out of the bag, open the case, and put it in the bin so they can openly inspect it. I've traveled with a large OBD scan tool in the past with no issues.

Or, you could ship it ahead of you via UPS, well insured of course.

Thanks BUP and Brian. Its just the Techmate pro. I know they are funny about stuff sometimes. I did think about possibly shipping it.

Flown at least 10 times with my Sierra stats. Never even a second look in providence or ft Lauderdale
