Ceramic Coating

Anyone ceramic coated their boat? Pro/Cons? I'm looking at over $5,000 to do the Maximus.

NWfreerider 03-27-2020 06:42 PM

I have had it done on 5 boats to date. Keeps the boat's finish looking new, easier to clean, and resists hull staining.

What about the engine room and engines and equipment in there. I'm going to be in salt water.

Had two cars done love it. Only downside is you cannot go thru automatic car washes. Makes for a long winter in the Midwest

I had a black car done, well worth the money. Make sure its done in a very clean environment, with good lighting. There was a little bit of wax on my car that was not removed during the prep, the coat went over it, and sealed it in.

That can very easily be
fixed tho.

So...I applied the off the shelf “Mothers” coating. Seems to hold up as well as wax for now. Am I wasting my time?

All my boats are and have been outboards so I have the cowlings and midsections done too. I boat mostly in salt water and the C-Quartz product my guy uses works great. I have no experience with inboards and engine compartments.

Why can’t you go through car washes?

I’ve heard to not to do the top deck of the boat. Any reasoning or validity to that? Didn’t make sense to me. How does the coating hold up under the water line?

You can still go through the car washes, just have to make sure they don’t spray any super high or low PH products on the car. Need to probably get a basic wash with just their foam soap that’s a Neutral PH.

Ceramic coatings make everything crazy smooth and slick, so the deck of the boat could be a dangerous place if you know what I mean.

The coating holds up great under the water line. We have gotten a solid 3 years on our Fountain with a Coating. Plus all I have done is spray a topper product on a few times a year. Meaning I have had zero reason to wax the boat for those 3 years.

Got it. Awesome, thank you.

We have an older top gun with porous gel coat that seems to get discolored over time...will this help prevent brown staining. How long does it last below the waterline? I’d likely only apply it to wetted areas for this reason.

it does not prevent growth or staining below the waterline. It does however make cleaning a scum line or the bottom of the boat easier. Dirt releases easier and seems to extend the amount of time it eventually takes between cleaning. Last year was my first year using it and will say it is worth it but not a magic elixir by any means. We would see videos of that all over the place and prices would be quadruple if what it is now.

johnmiffco 03-28-2020 07:13 PM

on porous gelcoat need to polish the hull with a clean and glaze compound made for fiberglass ,,,has light abrasives in it to clean the hull and glazing to seal it
then rubbbbbb it out good to remove any glaze residue then do a ceramic coat,,,,been doing it for quite a while here
most true 9h ceramic coating have about a 5 yr timeline,,,,bit less when on bottom,,,,
there is some new coatings that are not super slick,,,,bud just had his 32 done and no worse than regular wax finish
I also use it on acrylic winscreens also,,,,water flys off under speed and less scratching when wipe down

we buffed and waxed last year using fountain of youth products...but that didn’t prevent the staining. I wish there were a product I could apply that would eliminate the brown staining. every 2-3 weeks it needs an acid bath which leads to oxidation...then another buff and wax. It’s a vicious cycle.

johnmiffco 03-29-2020 11:12 AM

acid washing open up the gelcoat to be porous ,,,,just like sanding does,,,but worse as the acid wash soaks deep in the gelcoat
then must be machine compounded with a glazing/sealer product
then waxed or ceramic coated to make a barrier so wont absorb to be stained
I have a commercial glass shop,,,,,making molds and molded products
been using formula 5 brand clean and glaze on boats and molds for many yrs
there are other name brand gelcoat sealers ive just had good results in molds and repairs/blueprinting bottoms with this product
for sealing the gelcoat,,,,its specifically made for cleaning and sealing molds and fiberglass products that are gelcoat top coated
last few yrs been ceramic coating as the final step and longer results over layers of wax
after any acid wash gotta be resealed to block restaining,,,,,

I used the C quartz ceramic coating on my Black Thunder and love it. Prior to application I polished all the paint out and majority of bottom of boat. Now when I’m done boating for the weekend I can just spray the sides down with a hose and the scum lines come right off vs having scrub scrub scrub with cleaners then reapply wax, etc. I apply the reload spray once a summer and that’s about it.

I started looking into this several months ago for my Wright Performance 360 that I purchased new in November....it has been in the water twice....once at loto for shakedown and then the Key West Poker Run......Not sure how it all works but I would think the prep would be much less on new boat than on a boat with a few years on it.....I had a guy price me $5500.00 for one coat of primer and 3 coats of coating......is that reasonable considering new condition of the boat?

forgot to add that it’s being done in Ft Myers FL by a professional, has done may boats I know over the years.

thisistank 04-02-2020 12:56 PM

From everything I've read and seen, that stuff is amazing. Brings back deep liquid looking color and removes all oxidation. 5k seems a bit high but may be worth it.
Some pics in this thread from a local Havasu detailer that's done a LOT.
https://www.riverdavesplace.com/foru.../#post-3325274

Another thread from same detailer with examples of it applied. Oh, and he's quoting $70 a foot which would be 3100 ish on the max.

https://www.riverdavesplace.com/foru...pecial.189018/

And some info:
  • High solids premium silica coating
  • 10H hardness with extreme silk-like surface
  • Ultimate gloss & shine
  • Repels water, oil & dirt
  • 2 year warranty
  • Specially developed for the Marine industry

Just drag the max out to Havasu have it done and then use it while you're there! LOL I'll show you the ropes ;) :D

A primer coat?

What brand of coating is he using?

Very fair price.

If anything it would be overkill. But he probably knows his product. If he truly does all that as well as your motors then that is actually a good price.

I use our P&S coating and I do 2 coats. Easily get 3 years out of the coating.

Thank-you.....I appreciate the info......I was hoping since the boat was in new condition that the costs would not be as high.....as with everything else I am sure you get what you pay for

SABER28 04-02-2020 10:50 PM

most body shop supply shops can get you the products. i did my own boat with Malco ceramic coat. starter kit was 120 and a refill bottle was 60. did my boat with two coats. helps with the staining but doesnt stop it. i cant understand how they charge 3k to do a boat.
