Farewell OSO—At Least For Now

With its home page reverting to a message board format in a COVID-19 pandemic cost-cutting move, offshoreonly.com columnists are on hiatus, https://www.offshoreonly.com/article...-least-for-now.

Seemed pretty abrupt to me as well, especially when more people are going to be reading things online than ever before. Hopefully the world can get its head right in the coming weeks.

boatfreak 04-02-2020 09:07 AM

Unreal. I've enjoyed reading all of your stories and certainly hope to read more in the future.

You can still read all their stuff on www.speedonthewater.com ;)

speicher lane 04-02-2020 09:32 AM

Mat, Jason - stay safe and we will definitely be following you on SOTW.... your writing has been a welcome distraction in the last couple of weeks.

TYPHOON 04-02-2020 11:00 AM

WTF that's terrible IMO. I always read and looked forward to reading your articles. At a time like this we all need your up lifting interviews and keeping us posted on boating. I feel they are trimming the fat in the wrong area.

"OK, so the offshoreonly.com team jumped the gun a bit and pulled the home page last Friday, which not only kind of freaked us out but—in truth—pissed us off."

Sounds like the perfect time for OSO Steve to buy the site back.

Bostonirish 04-02-2020 11:45 AM

Makes absolutely zero sense ....

Smoke eater 04-02-2020 11:58 AM

Such a shame. Enjoyed reading the articles good luck you guys. Hope to see back in no time!

Padraig 04-02-2020 11:59 AM

Matt, does going to the Speed on the Water site help you guys with advertising revenue?

^ Worth asking twice^! Matt's one of the good ones. Need to help out in any way possible.

Griff 04-02-2020 12:51 PM

Makes no sense at all :(:(
Its a time when people have even more free time to surf the web, so instead of encouraging peeps to read on OSO, they drive them away.
I'm sure all your dedicated readers and OSO peeps will still be reading your stuff of SOTW or FB.

lucky strike 04-02-2020 12:56 PM

I enjoyed reading your stuff.
Thanks for all of it!

FWIW, the MODS all disagree with the decision.

I am personally disappointed, as I not only put on the party with you on behalf of OSO, but I call you both friends. I am sure the IB peeps will get more than an earful on this decision.

Knot 4 Me 04-02-2020 01:35 PM

Dumb. Will continue supporting Matt and Jason at SOTW.

Agree . Great writer and a great guy

Matt & Jason provide a unique service connecting readers to events & topics that are current in the performance boating World. Most of them not in their backyard or mine.

One of the key attractions & reasons I think OSO is still relevant for those of us still here.

Doesn't appear to be conducive to building revenue...sorry to hear this..thanks for all the great content!

Lane

Traffic is traffic for all intents and purposes, meaning speedonthewater.com gets traffic even if opened via a link on another site such as OSO. Direct traffic always is a worthy goal for a number or reasons, but referral traffic (such as that created by our seeding of the message boards) contributes to the bulk traffic number for speedonthewater.com. We intend to continue posting SOTW story links here.

The only thing I can think is that the advertisers on this site are seeing a reduced volume of business and are probably reducing their spending with IB. Sh!t flows down hill from there. But I could be wrong here.

rak rua 04-02-2020 06:38 PM

Strange times we live in when interesting, informative reporting gets in the way of profit. I've always believed good reporting would help drive profits. Apparently, I am wrong.

Sorry to read the disappointing news, I have always enjoyed reading your columns and will now follow SOTW more closely for my boating fix.

Thank you Matt and Jason for all your efforts and hard work, let's hope there is a return to OSO in the near future.

Jon.

Probably true, but reducing traffic on OSO creates a downward spiral. Less clicks on OSO translates to a lower value for advertisers.

Never in question. This decision came from way up the food chain. To clarify things, I added the "technology" to modify "team" as it applies to OSO jumping the gun on removing the home page.

We consider you and Yvonne as good friends as well, Greg. Please stay safe.

We either get through this nightmare together, or we don't get through at all.

Too Stroked 04-03-2020 05:34 AM

I've been really disappointed at the actions of several businesses during these unprecedented tough times. This one goes to the top of the list. I'll be checking SOTW on a regular basis rather than OSO now. Best of luck to Matt & Jason!

SUPERSTITIOUS 04-03-2020 09:49 PM

Their loss. See you on the other side.

PARADOX 04-04-2020 09:48 AM

Matt, Jason; I enjoyed reading and seeing all your awesome stuff. All the best, will be seeing you guys around. Peter
