I like the Amsoil Marine gear lube. No, it doesn't work well with a worn out cone clutch, but works great with good parts. It also claims to not lose any lubricating properties with up to 10% water intrusion.

I've ran Mobil 1 Synthetic 75w90 before in a drive that had leaking seals. When the oil in resevoir bottle changed color, drive was torn down to repair and clean. Lower gear faces were allready pitted and needed replaced. Merc oil is labeled as being able to run with water intrusion to a degree. |
when konrad was developing there performance drive they needed a good gear lube and obviously werent going to buy merc stuff. They found royal purple to be the lube there testing liked and it mixed well with merc lube incase a customer needed lube and couldnt find royal purple. i was always going to try it but being lazy i have always just bought merc lube
