The whole thing rings hollow to me when the admin. has a guy basically running a free help line and they want to charge him. Raise your hand if the reason you originally came here was to get help fixing your junk yourself.

Your argument may have merit if Jeffrey or Steve still owned the site and they worked a deal out with certain members separate from the site rules. As the site is now Corporate owned I donít see that happening nor would expect it to. He most certainly provided value but donít think for a minute it was solely out of the goodness of his heart. He was most definitely trying to also generate business and there was nothing wrong with that assuming he abided by the site rules. As to Danís point above you have to advertise to generate business. Word of mouth only goes so far. Hell I spent $500 last weekend at LOTO on booze and food.

THANK YOU, BUP!
When I first got on the OSO forum, BUP was there! Along with a few other OSO People.
Very few people know ILMOR MV-10's
He never asked for a CC#, Didn't try to sell his services, Just offered Free friendly advise with how to proceed.
After hours calls and emails, and or on weekends He was more help to me that ILMOR MFG. was during regular hrs.
His information lead to many of k's being spent with other venders than him self.

He knows his S***.

I would gladly donate to a go fund me! (For the info he gave me for free VIA PM's and in person phone calls.)

And Im sure there are many many more he has helped.

My take on him is that he is an old school guy thats more than willing to help another boater. And is an asset to OSO.

Q: I wonder if its against the "Rules" to post his info on future threads, so his knowledge is available to OSO communities questions and concerns?

Ex: I seen your question, I can offer free advise to "Give BUP" a call at 1-***-***-****#BUPisTheBest! JustAskBup.com

Its really not up to me, but I would say no.
He needs a Commercial Membership at a minimum to continue as he was.

Who are the non paying members who run full fledged marine businesses and advertise on OSO??

ive seen plenty of posts by CME in the swap shop threads soliciting sales of parts. How do you think I ended up with the garbage that was sold to me...? That goes for several sellers.

Its not that he cant afford it. Its to say thankyou and please don't leave. For what ever reason he has for not paying I don't care.

I second that!

Would it be OK to post "LAVEY 29" on River Dave's Place is John (BUP)?
Asking for a friend.

Another person that has always answered the phone and helped is Eddie young... before and after I was a customer.

Padraig 06-09-2020 04:45 PM

Yep, Eddie is a good guy and extremely knowledgeable. I haven't seen him on OSO in a long time.

Padraig

Captain YARRR 06-09-2020 05:53 PM

Definitely a shame. I had an issue with a boat in the past, multiple shops threw the towel in, and he was the only guy willing to talk me through fixing it. Turned out to be something simple but it eluded multiple mechanics. He saved my summer. Greatly appreciate it.

Eddienel 06-09-2020 10:04 PM

I enjoyed reading his stuff. Seemed like a very knowledgeable guy that cared. Heaven forbid he make a dollar.

AaronTN 06-09-2020 11:40 PM

There nothing I can say that others havenít already mentioned. BUP not in OSO is not the same. I have read so many discussions and forums replies with free advice and always valued his opinions. I have used the swap shop quite a bit. Who even goes to vendor side and look at new parts? If I want Teague, I go to Teagues website, if I want hardin, I go to hardins website. Does he even need OSO to fund his business? Probably not. Just my 2 cents.

Both Eddie and Jeff Harris were very helpful on my build even though I wasnít their customer. I havenít seen them here in ages though.

Coastal Mar Exp has a total of 18 posts on OSO that have not been deleted. In total he had 95 posts EVER on OSO. I can see all the deleted posts as well. Any for sale or swap shop posts were deleted as quickly as any of the Mods saw them.

So who are the other sellers you refer to who are in violation of the OSO advertising policy?? PM me if you would prefer.

TylerBurich 06-10-2020 09:48 AM

BUP not being on oso is a devastating blow to this forum. Those of you that know him understand.

Captain YARRR 06-10-2020 10:24 AM

It seems like Facebook has been taking users away from forums for quite some time. Forums like these definitely need every dedicated user they can keep. As mentioned earlier, forums definitely need every user that generates relevant content as well. I love seeing the Outerlimits and Statement posts, but let's be real...I'll never be posting about my new OL. But...I'll definitely be reading BUP walking someone through their 496 HO being moody. The forum owners feel like he's taking money away with his posting and I get it. What they fail to think about is the value of a user making content that others want to view. That kind of content is what keeps people coming back.

SR24Dave 06-10-2020 10:54 AM

So OSO kicks BUP, and takes money from a paid OSO add?
I understand that they need to make money 100%.
But lets pick our battles here, BUP is needed more than this book on OSO.
I think he is needed on OSO, where is the customer service to work out this issue.

This ad (pic below) is on the right side of my screen, to order a book, - " Rhymes From The NIGER"

I would be very surprised if the other "Paid" Advertisors support this?

Double R, BAM, Nordstrom,

Really?

BUP was an asset to this place, can't see anyone argueing against that.
However, as members, there's a lot we don't see. PM's between him and moderators, complaints, reactions from commercial members etc, etc. We're not in a great position to make the decisions.

Personally, I'm a little surprised he didn't fork out the $500 and promote his business, I'd have thought that would be money well spent. Might be a lesson for other commercial members, there's a bigger market available to them if they spend a little more time dishing out some free advice.... just saying.....?

Niger is a country. ****** is a racial term referring to black people.

BONDO10 06-10-2020 11:31 AM

PLEASE, PLEASE, Somebody post the " Beating the Dead Horse " emoji ...
There are rules, BUP was warned, BUP continued, BUP got banned.
Nothing against him whatsoever .

ShootinRopes35z 06-10-2020 11:37 AM

BUP gets banned and OSO sees the most activity in such a short time span it has in a year......something to be said about that.

I missed that one - between the yoga pants and tactical hats I never seem to get anything worthwhile. However I did once get a huge lead on a Septic System replacement...

DCB releases a $700k boat and it gets 4 views. BUP helps regular people and it gets almost 12k views.

But look, this isn't Jeffery or Steve's OSO where people actually cared about its members, it's a corporate entity and acts as such. If BUP is generating business he should abide by the rules no matter how insensitive it seems, it's just the way it is now and in part why this is a shell of its former iteration. The amount of quality members that have been lost is shocking, but until something better pops up this is what it is.

Facebook killed forums, BUP is on there also, only problem is you have to sift through all of the crap from people who don't know which end of a screwdriver to use and try and give advice.

Like no thread on OSO has ever taken an abrupt left turn before....

speicher lane 06-14-2020 12:23 PM

Is it just me or is the viewer and thread count gone WAY down in the last week+ right across OSO?

Normally I can log in and check on a full page plus of new posts and as of late, it is only a small handful - with only a few of personal interest enough to click on..... just an observation.
