This is very sad. Does anyone have any details on what happened? Alot of us have that same boat and I am sure curious what would cause it to capsize in a protected river.

Two "presumed dead". This is the lower Detroit River. The cruiser wakes can get crazy but to flip a boat that big? Wow. These are my boating waters. So sad.

Per this article the boat owner and driver is one of the missing. His wife also went missing in the river last year ! Speculation in the article regarding the boat, its speed and a turn it made prior to the accident.

"The 39-foot Nor-Tech Center Console reportedly rolled at about 7:30 p.m. after hitting a wake." The cruiser wakes get brutal and I've launched my 22' Donzi off a couple but haven't flipped. I guess it can happen to the best though. "My Way" crashed off a wake on the St. Lawrence River.

Thanks for link and info. Too bad. Thst was a lot of people on board for sure.

His wife was found in that river , dead, last year from what ? Anyone know ?

RIP. Another reminder that things can go bad at any moment.

His Wife may have been suffering from depression and took her own life last year one article said.

Man I feel really bad for their 3 kids who now have lost both parents in that river. Very sad. 😪

bill63 08-18-2020 05:45 AM

Both Husband and Wife die in the same river less than a quarter of a mile apart within 11 months apart. Poor kids ..
RIP

The boat could have easily hit bottom in that high speed turn. A Sunsation did that about 15 years back in shallow water and I think that's what happened to Joe Sgro in Key West a couple years ago.

Sucks for the 3 kids to lose both parents in a year.

That part of the river does have shoals and I stay in the shipping lane just to be certain I won't hit bottom. You have to know that area well to stray from the shipping lanes.

Online info says the Detroit river is 18-52' deep. And nearly all rivers are swollen right now. I don't see a boat hitting bottom.

Joe's accident wasn't in Key West. It was outside of Marathon/Faro Blanco. And there were not any reports of the boat hitting bottom that I can remember.

Very sad - especially the children involved.

I'd like to hear more about the cause if additional details are discovered.

joes wasn’t a high speed turn. Pretty sure one motor was leaking water, had a significant amount sloshing in the bilge, he realized he was headed for a sandbar and cut the wheel hard while coming up on plane. Once upside down if it wasn’t touching bottom it was damn close.

I just got a text for my son saying the boat owner was the owner of a construction equipment business he worked for. Also a friend of my son had just returned to the dock prior to the tragic run but his two kids were on the boat and survived, one of the kids said they were going fast and suddenly turned and were tossed into the river. (Had to edit this a couple times.)

Did I read this right, the owners wife was found dead in the river last year and the priest wife had killed herself? If that is true man those family's have to be spinning,,,,,,,,,,

As for the person in the article talking about speed, I have found most people have no idea how to estimate speed of a boat. Seems they always guess high.

Article says 39 NT was in capsized in 5 ft of water.............thought Joe's 52 was swerving to miss a sandbar at speed.
