Old boat magazines....
Been wanting to do this for yrs.
Now that our phones are cameras so I don’t have to scan/upload and I’m old enough to not care that they’re just pixs of magazine pages. No particular order other than how they came out of the box from the basement. Couple of points: The first pixs are of the pages of the “Boat show” issues of the mags my dad kept and gave me from the day. I liked them a lot because they gave you basic info but on almost everything. I almost cried when I lost half of them in a flooded basement 30 yrs ago!

I had a huge collection of all the Aussie stuff and a few American publications that made it to Australia. Downsized from a house to a condo and trashed half of it. Later moved overseas and dumped some more, leaving some in storage at Dad's house. Dad passed away so when I went back to Aus briefly I dumped the rest. Big mistakes, should have found a way to keep the whole lot. Hang on to them forever and when you're gone (about 100 years from now :)) if someone chooses to trash them all, it won't be you. RR |

A sweet reminder of how much I enjoyed getting my monthly Powerboat subscription in the mail . Even if it happened to be an edition without any boats that I really took to I never failed to get a kick out of the editors and contributors columns. Especially Dick DeBartolo. Remember the article he did about how they accidentally put a 24 Nova with jet drives 100' up on an island in the Hudson without getting a scratch on it ? Do you have the copy with the legendary test of the Four Winns that scared the crap out of Bob Nordskog ? |
Here’s some trivia for you.
Debartolos Nova Had twin jets! Dont remember Four Winns story? I was a huge fan of Nordskog and his accomplishments but..., I have a friend that worked for Hydrostream when he/PB tested one and he labeled it as dangerous and their heads exploded! He didn’t how to fly a light OB vee bottom!

Crap! I don’t have the 92’ issue of Power Boat with the TG and the PP. That looks like a good one! I got two 5-drawer filing cabinets full of magazines and brochures... And I love it!!

Was their “Offshore” performance tests issue.
Many other tests too. Funny, the ones we’ve forgotten. Best was on a 29’ Powerquest. Docked beside one and its owner at West Bay a coupe yrs back. It was flawless and a very nice, more recreational boat like we like. An older couple had it and when I complemented them on it and then guessed it was a 65 mph boat??? (Which to me, would be impressive for that type/style boat) He took great offense to it! (I actually figured 55 but guessed high to try avoid offending him) Said it was an 80 mph boat 🤓 Quizzed him on power, which further offended him....., he reported they were stick big blocks and why would I doubt his speed claims.....??? At that point my wife smiled at me, shook her head, and headed to the bar 😂 I stayed behind To explain to its owner that I meant no offense by my guess of 65 miles an hour, and that I thought that was very impressive for a boat with that type of creature comforts and luxury and that 80 would crush a lot of egos! He immediately went right back to assuring me that it was a true 80 mile an hour boat. Anyhow, so in the story I just stumbled on this morning same boat same power has a top speed of……, 65 miles an hour :-) Gotta love magazine tests😉 Like My buddy that 20 yrs ago, I watched get out of a claimed 80 mph boat ride, pulled out the first hand held, pocket sized GPS I’d ever seen. Showed me the screen that showed 70, smiled at me and said, “how do you like my lie detector?” W/o ever showing it to the owner of the “80” mph boat, put it back in his pocket and walked away 🤓

The Four Winn's incident involved them testing one of the (then) new 'U' boats , you know , the ones that were clones of the C16 and C18 Donzis. I think it was the U19 and I think it was Nordskog , not Teague . They were having a blast until they put it into a hard over turn and instead of banking inwards into the turn it violently heeled outwards onto the other side of the hull. Although I don't think it was the first boat that they tested that did that to be honest it just wasn't something that should have ever happened . Their wording of the incident was priceless and it haunted Four Winns for a very long time after with the U boat series . . |
