I was wondering if there are some smaller sized companies besides the big guys (skater, mti, spectre, all the west coast builders, etc) or any companies starting off when a 28+ foot speed cat. I want to get into one but all so expensive for such a simple build. Is there a market for this? Maybe ill make or buy a 28ft mold and sell a complete boat at around $100k with 250Rs. Still close to a 100mph boat and it keeps the price low where someone can get into an entry level 28+ft cat without having to give up an arm and a leg. Was thinking maybe the base model could be with gauges and maybe a small 9" GPS and a basic stereo system to keep the prices low. Not everyone is a big baller but still loves performance boating.. let me know your thoughts.

like it was mentioned by smarter people than me, overhead is the killer, so if you have a barn or huge garage on your property and can afford the floor space in said barn/garage then i say go for it, build your mold pop a mold whatever you gotta do to feed the wanna build it addiction.
it doesnt have to be vacuum infused carbon fiber 5 axis cnc plug baked in an oven and shipped to 3 different shops for rigging painting and interior.

It's only a failure if you dont try, it's only money spent if you build yours and it goes no further

Don’t worry, that boatless dude has been a dick for as long as I have been on these boards. If I recall right he bought a new 28? Skater around 2008/9.

Hate to admit it, I think he’s right in this case though. When Tim G was with Cigarette in 2005 or 2006 he explained it to me as the 30 vice coat the same to build as a top gun. I said no way, that’s 8 foot less of boat. When he explained both boats would get the same batteries, battery boxes, interior, gauges, often engines, there wasn’t mich difference in glass and resin I threw my boat building dreams out the window.

If someone can overcome that issue themselves and do what the op is asking about then good for them. I won’t risk my retirement, house, or play money on it.

...........

I’ve always struggled to fully accept that argument. It certainly carries some weight but if it were 100% accurate, would the same argument hold up with a 35’ boat Vs a 40’? Why not a 50’ Vs 60’? etc, etc.....

IMO, a big part of the gap in the market between say 24’ and 30’ is the boat itself. Once you step up in size, everything gets harder. Trailering, storage, maintenance, daily preparations and wash downs. I think money plays a part but it’s also buyers stepping up from smaller boats that are easily operated single handed to larger boats that take more time and effort say, “We may as well go a step further”.

If you need a bigger tow vehicle, a bigger garage, someone to help launch/retrieve and clean, you’re no longer in the small boat category.

So then why is a bigger boat have a much more expensive price tag? (If they both had essentially the same power)

Question for anyone with insight in the boat production world- does the boat building world have “contract production companies” that outsource their talents? Almost like a production facility that you bring your own molds and specs and they build it for you.

Peter Hledin and John Cosker have laid up hulls for other limited run companies. Like everything in-house or external on the pipeline, it comes down to $$$ and an open window in the production schedule.
