Help, need Rolex for wife for Christmas

My wife has the need for a Gold Rolex Masterpiece ladies watch. (or so she says) Anyone know of a fair, and legit dealer, either new or used. She has looked and I know exactly what she wants.
Maybe ill get my new 36 eliminator cat:D You think??????
I understand that there are alot of fakes on the market and I don't want to get burned:confused: :)

puder 11-14-2002 11:17 PM

you might be better off seeing if you can find a nice vintage rolex. They switceh dover a few years ago to thier own movement (guts). The guts used to be made by zenith but now theya re made entirely by rolex. Apparently the rolex movement isn't as acurate or robust as the zenith movement. As a result the zenith movements one will hold thier value better than the rolex movement ones. So i've heard.

That being said i've ben wanting a stainless(stainless bracelet) or white gold (leather band) daytona for a while. BUT i am slowly moving over to think perhaps i like the vacheron overeseas stainless better :D

If she has her heart set on ar olex get her whats she asking for BUT there are a TON of very very nice watches of higher quality out thier for the same or less price than the rolex. Granted when your wearing a rolex everyone knows you have a $5000 (at minimum) watch on. The other only people who are into watches will know. Kind ioof liek us with boats.

Most people know a fountain. Those who are "in the know" would take an OL over a beak anyway. :D

Go with the fake !!! :D

My friend had one that was better looking then the real one . (He had several real ones ) ! He wore his fake $150 one to the boat show . Huge , gold thing ! It was massive ! The guy at one of the booths kept looking at his watch and after a bout 20 minutes of BS'n , Finaly says "How come your watch looks so much better then mine " ! He had the same one . My friend says mine may be newer . The guy says I just bought mine last week . My frined says your must be a fake ! The guy says it can't be ,I got a deal for $6000 !! We walked away with the guy blown away by this fake watch ,not knowing it was fake . Finaly my friend walked back and told him .......... The guy almost fell down !!:D He couldnt' beleive the fake was much nicer looking then the real one . $6000 on sale compared to $150 ................

I thought it was funny ..........:p

HHHhhhmmmm.... HOW MUCH WILL YA GIVE ME FOR IT?

Fountain38 11-15-2002 02:06 AM

The reason I am being so careful is the watch she wants has diamonds around the bezel and diamonds at the five minute mark on the dial. Mother of pearl dial. It is gold and it is the Masterpiece. Retail is 18500. Dealer says 16500, plus 1250 in tax.
So it is an expensive watch.
Just want to make the right choice and decision. E-bay has some like she wants for about 11500 to 13000. I was concerned about getting burned by e-bay. Basically this is the watch she wants below if I did the link right. Thanks for the help

Man, I can't see spending that kind of money on a watch!! I know people do it, but I just can't see why?!?! I like my Fossil!! But, good luck on your search.

26scarab 11-15-2002 06:27 AM

Consintracy,
I totally agree with you. I know you don't lose money on Rolex's but there are so many other nice watches on the market. I can see spending a grand or two but ten thousand on a watch just seems wrong. They sure are nice though !:D

THRILLSEEKER 11-15-2002 07:24 AM

Buy her a Casio, and use the money you saved for your cat:eek: :D

Puder, that's only only on the Daytona's. Rolex movements have always been Rolex movements, except for the chronographs.

Here's my $.02 on Rolex: I'm a certified watch nut. I've owned vintage Omega, Perregaux. LeCoultre, Doxa, Universal Geneve, etc. But the ones I kept were the vintage Rolexes. They are the only ones that will stand up to what normal guys will dish out. You can hammer nails with the case, the crowns are big and beefy, and the bracelets are tough and resilient. Rolexes were never designed to be jewelry, (it just happened that way..). They were watches originally built for divers, soldiers and outdoorsmen.

Do they keep time as good as a quartz watch? NO WAY! Our old Rolexes (1964 Oyster Perpetual, 1966 Ladies Oyster Perpetual non-date, 1969 Submariner) keep time to within 5 minutes a month, no where near what a quartz watch will do. But I've owned all three for over 15 years, and have never opened the cases! Just pick 'em up, shake them a little and wear them. No batteries to die right when you need a watch the most! And no leakage, ever.

It's the only watch I've owned that you can wear while bilge diving all day getting covered in grease and oil and then go home, shower and go out to a nice dinner without removing it from your wrist!

And you gotta love a woman who knows EXACTLY what she wants!! The Masterpiece is awesome! :D

Guys, I understand your reasoning on not spending that much on a watch. I am just lucky enough to be able to have such a wonderful wife and be able to afford it.:) Thanks for the help everyone

MegaByte*3 11-15-2002 08:27 AM

Fountain38:

I have 3 Rolex' (2 submariners and Puder's pre-switch stainless Daytona) and bought the wife a gold president. Although she loved it when we bought it, she doesn't wear it all that often. She doesn't like having to keep it moving or reset it after leaving it in her jewelry case for a month. If your wife is a gadget person, she'll love the watch for a long time. If not, plan on seeing it in her jewel box more than on her wrist.

That said, anytime we're going out for the evening I get asked to reset her watch just as we're going out the door.

My advice, since she's a "wonderful wife" and you can afford it, enjoy. The only other thing I have learned is to have the jeweler ship it to you via US Post Office registered mail. If they ship it to you, you need not pay sales tax. This of course is assuming you don't buy it at home.

Is your wife's name Dana?
If so, I have met her before. She is very nice.

Dano 11-15-2002 08:40 AM

Just bought one for the future wifey on ebay...brand new all paperwork etc, etc. everything included. Over 50% less than retail. No problems in the purchase at all. Wish I'd done the same when I bought mine. Buttload-o-gas tickets coulda' been had.

he wants a masterpiece not a datejust. nice try though. BTW that had to be one of ssherman's best "bone head" moves i have ever seen. it ranks right up there with her unused airline ticket. LOL!

getting back on the subject, i also recommend Frum. i have several family members that are repeat customers. great reputation, great service....

I've got a '67 2-tone. Other than the plastic crystal, it is an anvil. Put a new bracelet on it in '86 and the newer bracelet was of better quality than the original (the original's gold links were rolled while the newer one had continuous gold links). Updated the hands to the newer style in '90 when I replaced a crown and put a fresh bezel on it (was welding and managed to scuff the crown so I replaced it).

This watch has been worn through a lot of abusive situations. Ten minutes with some rouge and a polishing wheel and I can make it look like new at the drop of a hat (don't polish on the fluted bezel).

Watch has been to NY for a tuneup in 1988. Runs great (loses a few minutes a month).

Also have a 1994 gold president with tapestry dial. And a 1985 2-tone like my other one (got it for a song at a pawn shop when I was looking for a floor jack).

Wife has a 1996 2-tone and added a diamond bezel two yrs ago.

Have bought 14 Rolexes for employees over the years... Just bought 2 more and haven't picked them up yet.

Also have a Movado and 2 Tag-Heuers (the Tags are also anvils).
Plus a 25yr old Seiko sport100 diver watch that is my "dig in the sand" watch.

** Here's the scoop.
- Pacifictime.com will give you reasonable discouted prices for reference when shopping with your locals.
- Rolex has a strict no-discount policy that it leans on its dealers with: the ALL stainless watches are hard to get deep discounts on. You will be able to negotiate on any watch with gold on it - and even more so if it has stones...
- I have been able to average 20% from retail on stainless watches and closer to 30% on watches with gold and stones.
(no Rolex authorized dealer would discount a penny on ALL-stainless watches unless I bought them in quantities of three or more and used a reseller's tax number - this was their way around the policy - no issue with "onesies" on the gold watches).

My source is just a local jeweler friend who shops some sources for me - so far it has been a couple of different sources. Friend is not an official Rolex jeweler so the suppliers are a little more apt to discount to him since he can't get caught in the policy wars with corporate.

-- If your wife has chosen the exact watch she wants, then your task is easy. Figure out what you want to pay and go get a cashier's check from the bank. Take it to your local Rolex places and physically hand it to the manager if he has the watch in stock - those bastages have a REAL HARD time handing the check back to you...

mega byte any interest is selling that stainless daytona??? Abuddy of mien is wait listed from rolex for anew one but i will be anotehr 9-12 months at least and becasue of limited prouction retail on them is RIDICULOUS if youc an even find one!

BGLZ42, I really really really like the vacheron constantine overseas chrono. I hear that is as tough as anything out there. Additionally the audemars piguet royal oak offshore is growing on me too.

As for the price of the watch. Look at it this way. its espensive but its not TOO bad.
http://www.vacheron-constantin.com/h...et_minute.html
That one lists for 500k. At least i thitnk that is eth one. It mightbe the pocket watch repeater/grand complication/ repeater that is for 500k though. If youwask em half amill on a watch is totally insane but each thier own. It certainly is neat.

MegaByte*3 11-15-2002 10:14 AM

from Puder: "mega byte any interest is selling that stainless daytona??? "

Nope. Find your own, dude! I got lucky at the jewelers in Naples where my wife gets her fix. It was delivered that morning, I happened to be there. Full list, no haggle, no wiggle, just a pleasant smile and a brief reference to the waiting list that was as long as the store owners arm. It has since cost me 2 pieces from some designer named Krypell and a re-engagement ring that could pay for some really nice motors. :) Good luck with your search.

Tom

I love my Rolex, what an excellant watch. My parents bought it for me for my college graduation present. It will be something that I can have for the rest of my life. 10 grand cash would have been nice, I could have used it towards a truck, boat or snowmobile etc. These items all lose their value and have a self life so to speak. In the overall picture, I am gald that I have the watch. I also have a Tag, all gold retail price $2000. What a piece of junk, the gold is starting to rub off after 3 years. When I purchased this watch the sales person had the nerverto say it was a better watch than a Rolex. In my opinion, they are not even close. Moral of the story: you get what you pay for.

Just my .02:D :D

Fountain38 11-15-2002 10:47 AM

Summer, Sorry her name is not Dana. Its Stephannie. Where did you think you may have met her at? Anyway I have my work cut out today looking for a watch. Really appreciate all the help on referrals:D

McGary911 11-15-2002 12:30 PM

This past summer I was in the Caymans with my family, and picked up a stainless Rolex (I have a gold\stainless, but I wanted one a little less dressy). I saved about $400 over what i would have paid in the states, and when you buy one down there, the warantee period is doubled to 2 years. Not that you should need one with a Rolex. I saved even more $, as I may have forgotten to pay the duty on the watch when i came back in through customs. ;) My stepmom liked it so much, my dad had to buy her one for their anniversary (which they celebrated while we were down there).

So save $$ and get it in the Caymans. The bonus is that you can get a helluva nice vacation at the same time.

Good luck,

SummerObsession 11-15-2002 01:06 PM

sorry about the mix-up fountain38.
I know one of the guys who owns Chucks Barbeque. I think that's the name, I thought he was from around there. His name is Charley and his wife's name is Dana. Thought it might be you.

Uncle Toys 11-15-2002 02:11 PM

Fountain38 - Be careful, unless you REALLY know what your doing, you can get sold a fake. I would especially be worried if I was offered one at 50% under retail.

bglz42 - right on! From jeans to tux and even in the lake, best man watch period!

p.s. Fountain38, you sound like a man who's wife lurks on the board :D :D Be careful, quid pro quo is a dangerous slope! I should know ;)

Thunder1 11-15-2002 02:55 PM

Fountain38...

If you are going to go new check this website... They are very good and I and several friends have had no complaints... You get to skip the tax too... If the preowned market is the avenue you choose, be VERY careful... Hope this helps...

Tnx, Karl

Gearhead99 11-16-2002 05:13 AM

Rolex, good watch. I've had one for around 15 years. They don't keep "real" good time. But, they are bullet proof.

Fountain38

Have you noticed from the posts that almost everyone doesn't pay list price on a Rolex. There is always a deal on a good one.

Be at the right place at the right time with cash/check in hand.

Good luck

bglz42 11-16-2002 06:22 AM

Puder, you da man! I love them PP's!

F38, I'm with ya man. Married 12 years, I live by the adage,

"What Baby wants, Baby gets!"

If she goes to the trouble to point the object of her desire out to me, she owns it!

And she NEVER tells me no! For anything...

DaBeezer 11-16-2002 02:04 PM

Attention ALL ROLEX OWNERS !

I just got a call from my Rolex dealer, and the news is just like my engine builder!

It seems my 10 year old Rolex has "tossed a rod"!:(
I took it in because it kept stopping after only a couple of hours.
It turns out that a screw inside the case backed itself out and fu#%!*
up the winding weight and a few other things.

This is the last thing I needed after popping my motor five months ago (Bruce Dudley F/U)
Well now I get to spend 20% of what I paid for it...to fix it.
Sounds just like a boat doesn't it?

So the moral of my story is, if you buy one or own one, you better take it in every five years or so to a Certified Dealer, and have them go over it to make sure everything is 100%. :o

I still love the watch, but to say it's "bulletproof" is BS.

DaBeezer 11-16-2002 02:13 PM

Sorry, I forgot to leave my dealer info for you locals,
do yourself a favor and take it in to be gone over.
