Where to get Baja parts???????
I am in need of the top lid for the cabin door on my 280 Sportfish. The part that flips up, not the sliding door itself. Any ideas where to get one?

I have emailed Baja and XT Innovations this morning, but haven't heard back from either one yet. No matter how many times you tell people not step on the plastic hatch, it goes right in one ear and out the other. Apparently not rated for 250#
|
How about contacting Glassdave and see if he can fix it for you????
|
Is it acrylic, plastic, or fiberglass?
|
Appears to be acrylic
|
Send it to a glass guy and have it made out of sturdy fiberglass that can hold up to the 250# chickees. Glassdave is popular here for good reason.
|
I hope you mean two chickees, that their combined mass adds up to #250

Maybe in Canada, here in the good ole USA they tend to run a little larger |

I don't know if you can actually buy them already done up but I had a sign maker fab up some 3" round stickers that look like the Ghostbusters logo but with a foot instead of the Stay Puft man on them and the words 'No Step' They certainly are visible and they seem to work . |
It is just a flat panel with 1 90deg bend. i can probably make it if I can source the right material
|
I'd look into reinforcing it too. Looks very hard not to step onto.
|
Powder coated 1/4" aluminum with a fold in it seems like it'd work real nice.
Jump up to 3/8 if ya want. |
Us longtime Baja owners (I have a '92 208 and a 2000 252 Islander) have learned awesome fab skills to keep our babies looking good...because there simply isn't much of anything for sale, insofar as replacement parts goes. As you noted, XT Innovations still has a few odds and ends, and Great Lakes Skipper has an ever-dwindling stock.
|
.
you can use the original part as the "mold" to create the new fiberglass version let us know which way you decide to go with this . |

Jump up to 3/8 if ya want. I used 1/4" aluminum plate to cover where previous hatch scoops were as it was the simplest solution and easily removed to re install them. |

IMO, too heavy for where it is. Would probably weigh 15ish lbs and would suck bad to get wacked in the head going into cabin.

Does it fold back onto deck I wonder, almost 180° ? If what he has keeps getting broke. For comparison what do ya think a stiff enough fiberglass part would weigh?
I think I'd probably try having it made out of Lexan or another similar polycarbonate. |

I would guess it props up with a gas shock. I'd say prob 3-5 lbs for a fiberglass one with a composite or balsa core. I'd be worried about cosmetic stress cracking with fiberglass.

There's multiple Baja FAcebook forums with many parts available from part outs etc.

Easy fix - I had the same problem on a Pantera - the door cracked and broke in half - called all around as your doing to supplier - 500 to 700 quotes - Then was suggested locally to seek out an acrylic fabricator - Did a search found a local one - it was a $300.00 - would have only been about 150 to 200 except the fabricator only stocked black an and clear sheets - had to buy a whole sheet of white to make my hatch - they even installed the hatch locks - Do a google search in your area
