Who has a 'named' boat? And what's its story...
 

Buddy of mine recently traded boats, the one he bought had a name and he wants to change it, but people at his condo have turned around 3 times and spit backwards to ward off the voodoo at the very mention of that, lol! Telling him there is a a ritual that must be followed...

I've had several boats but never named any of them. Thought about it a few times but never did.

So, for those with named boats...care to share a little? Did you name it yourself? Buy it with the name and keep it? Change the name?

I bought an old sport fish a few years ago and renamed it with out going through the proper ritual. With in the first year I replaced both Detroit Diesel's (only 1300 hours on them) with brand new Cummins because one blew up. The new engines cost me about $150k installed. Ended up being a great decision but damn did that hurt.

I changed names, I recall you have to have the old one somewhere so I wrote it in the engine compartment and put the new one on the back...all turned out well...no issues with the water demons.

Voodoo associated with boat name changes is absolute nonsense in my mind but if you want to believe it, that’s up to you.

Long time ago, a friend of mine bought a boat named “Wet Dreams” and he believed the superstitions. He later changed the name to “The Real Thing” and had printed very small on the transom, I used to have wet dreams but now I have the real thing!

All boats that are Coast Guard Documented must be named. My wife has Marine Vessel Documentation, and I will tell you 99% of all boats sold and re-documented into the new owners will get the name they choose, not carry over the old name.

The only thing that will stay with the boat forever* is the Documentation number, it is a Coast Guard thing...

So all voodoo, crazy folk lore, etc is a good excuse for those that are afraid to walk under ladders, step on sidewalk cracks or chase black cats.... But for the rest of us, time to move on!!!!!

Had "Sand to Sea" which was a play on our family name (Santucci).

I've had two documented boats. One I changed the name, the other I haven't (yet). Might after I think of a better name.....

Regarding luck - every go fast boat is bad luck. Stuff is always broken!!!

My boat has had the same name every since ( Jeffrey Cheng ) the founder of this site ( OSO ) purchased the boat from Dick Simon. Dick and Sean Stinson raced the boat in F2 class
