That's kind of the point of my post. Not so much as wanting to hammer it full throttle off idle. I was so easy on the throttle I couldn't get the damn nose down, so trying to find what the sweet spot is, if there is one. Sounds like just play it smart and i'll figure out the boat and what it likes.

You don't ever beat on your boat? What's the sense in having a fast boat if you're not going to let it rip once in a while? I would've bought a pontoon in that case

Using your trim tabs can help get you on plane faster without as much throttle. Your drives will thank you.

I'm new to boats, but have been around performance cars a long time so I understand power/parts/weight all play a factor. Generally speaking, if you're taking off from idle how aggressive should/can you be with the throttle? I had my boat out the first time last weekend and was really easing into it out of the hole in fear of breaking something. The guy I purchased from didn't seem like he beat on the boat at all, so it may just be his mindset to play it safe and put less stress on the drives. I've launched cars on slicks at 4k RPM and never had an issue, but maybe boats are different lol

What's the consensus?
540Fever,

What boat? What engine? HP? What drive?

I had a Rinker 236 Sport Cuddy at 3750lbs dry with a 435HP 454 and a Bravo1 drive that I flogged like Molly for ten years without literally ANY required maintenance other than regular PMs until I sold a perfectly functioning boat to a good friend who I still boat with. We skied countless hours behind that boat, which requires full throttle at launch with a 200lb man dragging like an anchor behind the boat. Never had that first issue with the drive.

Like you said, this question has a ton a variables. Fill us in on a few of them.

Thanks. Brad.

These are NOT drag boats.

Baby it out of the hole, always.
We put enough shock loads on them as is. There is no need your drive through a high torque load holeshot unless you need to get out of the way of something in a hurry.

540ci - No idea on power. Unfortunately the guy I bought it from never got build sheets from previous owner. I can verify it's a bowtie block by the stamp, Dart Pro 1 heads (not sure on port size), 1050 dominator, and what appears to be a pretty health cam (flat tappet or roller?). I wish I knew what was inside for the rotating assembly and valve train. My curiosity will likely have me pulling it to see and refresh the valvetrain while I'm in there. Conservatively, I'd think it's every bit of 600hp even with low compression.

I like to get on after idle to 1200 or so RPM to make sure the drive coupler has the load vs. at idle where it can load on/off. Also make sure your engines are at least 140+ before take off. High RPM + cold engine = bad day.

I gently slide mine up from 1200 RPM to maybe 3/4 throttle, depending on load if I need get on it enough to let the props slip a hair to build RPM, then as the speed comes up, I keep the RPM below 4k, then settle into 3600 cruise on mine.

No reason to floor it, the boat has the power. Now, my Model X on the other hand, is on it's 2nd set of tires at 20,000 due to burning a lot of electrons

540Fever,

OK. Now I get the username reference. I wondered....

I'd guess it's not a stock B1 upper, given the Imco Lower, but that's no guarantee. It seems I read more about uppers letting go than lowers, but I'm no expert and I could be remembering wrong.

I think I'd have a look inside the drive while you've got the engine out ogling it's innards. Nothing like actually knowing what you've got.

You probably want to go a little easy on it until you know what you've got. Probably safe, but.....

Thanks. Brad.
