Converted 388 Supercat headed to California

I've had quite a few questions come my way after guys are seeing Freedom and Relentless listed in the classifieds section, so this post will explain what's going on. When I first bought Freedom, it blew a motor on the third day of running it at the 2019 FPC MIBS Poker Run. I completely went through both motors and when we got back on the water for the 2021 Skaterfest event, it blew another motor on our second day on the water - with Pete behind the wheel. Because I couldn't seem to get through a single event without blowing a motor, I decided to throw in the towel on trying to run that program from 2,300 miles away (I kept the boat in Michigan). So I sold Freedom and it's hurt motors to get out of that endless money pit. Next, just as I'm finished with completely redoing Relentless, and settled into the fact that it will be my long-term Skater that stays on a lift behind my house, the 388 that Chris Mills/Boat Customs converted and I wanted to buy so badly 2 years ago came up as a teaser sales ad last Friday night. I called Bernie Neuhaus (Marine Unlimited) first thing Saturday morning and managed to get first rights to buying Ray Contreras' converted 388 Supercat raceboat w/ detuned Supercat motors that was finished in September of 2019. This is my dream boat, as it is basically a bigger version of my original 2005 30 Prototype build that was also extremely cut-down, lightweight and had naturally aspirated motors. This 388 (the first converted 388 raceboat that I'm aware of) is a super cut-down, ultra-light layup boat designed to go fast on light power. Originally raced in Supercat Light with a class minimum weight of 8,200 #s w/ Mercury Racing 525s, the boat ran a best of 131. After the conversion, Contreras had a set of his 510ci/800hp Supercat motors detuned for pump gas and installed in the boat, which is what is in it now. So I hope this explains all the craziness that has gone on lately with my Skater addiction since the conversion of my Skater 30 Prototype back in 2018. I'm certainly hoping (and especially my girlfriend too) that this 388 will be my "last one". :picard1:

Dale,

Smart way to rationalize your Skater fleet. The 388 is supposed to be the goldilocks Skater. Not too big and not too small.

Somehow, I doubt that it will be your last, though.:whistle:__PRESENT

Sweet, I had no idea those boats could run that fast with just a 525. Thanks for sharing the story.

I remember when it came to the races it was an awesome piece.

Dang!
I love that crossover exhaust. That must have been interesting welding that together 😂
