Safe investment - i bonds

Go to TREASURY.GOV
I've been buying them for over 20 years.7.12 % now and will probably go up on 4/1. The best kept secret.

In current times I’m a little reluctant to invest in anything related to .gov. After my nice little score it’s gold and silver from here on out. At least for the next couple years.

Interesting..... Just looked them up.

I buy 10K for me and 10K for my wife each calendar year, which is the maximum amount allowed, but you can buy another 5K with your income tax refund per calendar year. So it is only peanuts and won't make a difference to most portfolios. If I could purchase much, much larger amounts I would, as it would at least keep us close to inflation.

10K max investment reaps $712 tax free.

So even if the rates didn't change over the last 20 years you made $14,240 on a 10K investment.

Walmart stock is up +74.91 (107.18%)today in the last 5 years alone. Very blue chip stock, not tech stock risky.

I bonds are only a small part of my portfolio.I started buying them in 2001 when you could BUY $30,000 per social security number. This rule lasted for about 10 years and then changed to the $10,000 limit.I still think this a safe place for a person to invest and it sure beats what banks are paying. The key is to buy a bond every year and let the interest keep compounding.

I started buying I bonds back in the 90s. They are not tax free. I was going to use them to pay for my kids college. Found out I make too much, and was taxed on every penny I made on them. There were quite a few years were they paid zero interest, plus the fixed rate. Basically duds. I sold a bunch back in 2020 too invest in the market. Made more in 2 years than i did in 20 plus years holding on to them. The ones I still have are paying over 8% the last time I looked.
