boat upside down

I saw a video the other day that showed a large MTI CC towing a cat upside down, I hope that everyone on the cat is ok, thought maybe it was from the MTI fun run last weekend. Didn't a MTI cat flip over last year at LOTTO? I'm surprised this video is not all over this forum.

WARPARTY36 03-15-2022 08:26 PM

I’m surprised it hasn’t hit this forum too. All occupants are fine. High winds and bad weather conditions that day.

Skater30 03-15-2022 11:02 PM

I heard about this a few days ago from friends that were on the Skater outboard fun run in Florida. From what I heard, it was another 390X that went over. Glad to hear that everyone was ok!

Yep, heard that same...

Sydwayz 03-16-2022 11:23 AM

"another 390X" went over? What exactly happened? And which time?

pslonaker 03-16-2022 10:23 PM

I guess this happened this last weekend at the MTI fun run. Just bought the boat and it blew over from what I heard. Heard drivers girlfriend had a broken collarbone and other injuries. Not the same as the one that went over at LOTTO a year ago.

36Tango 03-16-2022 10:38 PM

Not trying to pile on anybody, just trying to learn. What happened? 390x outboard? 450's? What were the water conditions? This is the second 390x that has gone over?

The 390X is only offered as an outboard (450s) boat. I have no idea about any of the specifics of this accident, or the other 390X that went over at night on LOTO last year. I'm certain both accidents were 100% driver error, as the boat is an excellent driving boat. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to drive one in Florida on a windy day and it did everything right. Again, I'm just glad to hear there were no serious injuries or fatalities.

The picture above is the first one that flipped that then Shaun Torrente bought I’m sure at a hell of a price and later sold to Bill Forenski.

.

conditions have been terrible all over FL.for weeks now with big storms every week.

Jupiter Sunsation 03-17-2022 04:26 PM

Glad everyone is ok minus a collar bone.

Hope it wasn't the blue/teal Breitling inspired boat..........that was the Miami show "best in show!"

Well that pic makes oil changes much easier! anyone know why the did not right the boat ? it seems pretty bizarre to put it in the parking lot upside down on stands

resurrected 03-18-2022 07:49 AM

I would assume it was just a regular crane operator and help when it was pulled form the water. Rolling a boat over without causing way more damage take experience and a solid plan.

Gets all the water out! :D

Cash Bar 03-18-2022 11:00 AM

They found the one at LOTO floating in the late-night dark with no people nearby. We were flying to the lake early the next AM and landed in charlotte on layover to 100 messages of people worried it was us. Phone going straight to VM and a few hours of no response had some anxiety going in our friend circle.

The 390 had only sold a few weeks before to that owner.

That was September 2020

Hard to tell the extent of the damage from that picture...but that had to be a sickening sight to see!

You are correct. It did happen here. I think that happened over a year ago plus.

pslonaker 03-22-2022 05:09 PM

this one I wrote about happened two weeks ago at the Miami MTI fun run. Heard water was rough and driver ran out of talent. Heard trim was set way to positive 38% and running to fast for conditions

NWfreerider 03-22-2022 06:14 PM

38% is trimmed to the moon!!

What boat was it?

I do not have a modern OB, how much is 38%? What does that look like? I am assuming 0% is level?

NWfreerider 03-23-2022 09:28 AM

0% is tucked all the way down. Neutral can vary per boat but probably around 20%.

NWfreerider 03-23-2022 09:29 AM

These boats run with negative trim due to the lift provided. Runing positive trim, especially in rough, windy conditions is a recipe for disaster.

I believe you may be incorrect. At Lake X my trim was set to about 35 being neutral. It was previously at 10. The reasoning was for larger adjustment to be possible in both directions.

I think the 390 is set up similarly.

Greg is correct. MTI as well as myself and others set the Garmin displays and VV units with a calibration factor in the Mercury VV that can adjust the percentage amount to be what ever you like. MTI as well as Mercury Racing normally make 40% level with the bottom of the boat.
On my Skater if I add 2 degrees positive trim the reading is around 50%. Same I believe with the MTI's. Customers are normally told never to exceed 50%.
If you use the factory defaults on the VV I believe level is around 12% on a Garmin display.

pslonaker 03-23-2022 05:00 PM

I don't know who it was

Interesting Ron! My screens read right at 35% when level with the bottom - same as Greg's outboard DCB. I didn't know most screens displayed similar percentages for trim angle. I never have to worry about blowing over for two reasons - my 36 is a 9,500# big-bottom girl with light power, and it's fastest with negative trim anyways!

Heard 30kt headwind. 3 foot seas. First time driver. Don't be a hero. No trophy for that!
