6-8’s you would fall in between the swells and not see past the wave. Didn’t happen in your video.

I don’t think Twin O/B would B.S. on here, if says 6’, the biggest waves were probably pretty close. (Nobody ever mentions the smallest waves)

Personally, I was brought up to measure waves the ‘Hawaiian’ way. Most of the world measure the face of a wave, from bottom of the trough to the top of the crest. I measure the back of the wave so I’m only measuring the wave (above the calm sea level) and not the trough.

I know I’m in the minority but if you search Google, you’ll see that either way is correct. One positive, if I post on here about wave height, I can double the size of the waves, and improve my story, by using the more common method. 🙂

The Great Lakes can be really nasty fast. I got caught in a flash storm in my 16' Larson Senza in 10-12' waves. In the trough I was looking up to see the top of the waves and I could only see land at the top of the wave. Fortunately they weren't breaking. I had to ride them like a dirt bike as my boat fit on the face of the wave and coming down the back side was almost vertical. It was 2 miles to the harbor and by the time I got there I had broken every motor mount in my out board and lost all throttle control. Luckily I am still alive to tell about it. I made the same trip years later in an 18' Glastron in 5-6' and I thought the boat was going to break in half it was flexing so bad. Yes I was wearing a securely fastened PFD both times.

I grew up surfing on the east coast...we called this method east coast vs west coast...as a 3 foot day on the east coast would be ~1 foot in SoCal.

Pm me your number so next time I’m in rough water, I’ll call you and you can tell me how big the waves really are.

I ran 70 mph in 6’ swells in the Atlantic w/my 24’ Sonic when we lived in Fla.

Its like driving through rolling hills in the country.

I couldn’t event keep my first 24’ Sonic on plane in 3’ waves in Lake Erie.
When I bought it, it wouldn’t stay on plane bellow 30 mph.

Which doesn’t work, in a 24’ boat, in 3’ waves, in Lake Erie.
Like riding a skate board down an escalator.

W/work and set up, I got it to stay on plane down to 20, which then worked in Erie’s 3’ waves.

Any of you fkg experts want to go for a ride, in the rough, in Erie, in a 25’ boat, and tell me how big the waves are…., I’ll save you a seat.

Until then….., I’ll never mention wave height again cuz you are clearly way smarter than me.

Take it easy tough guy. If the waves were too big for your boat or comfort level it doesn’t matter if they were 3’ or 30’. All I said was they weren’t 6-8’. Unbelievable how worked up people get.

Last time I’ll waste on this but:

A. Earlier in thread I wrote that I rode my bike out to breakwall to ck conditions and watched boats disappear between waves.

B. Also wrote that only the last two waves in video (where you can count the seconds before the boat lands in the wave troughs) we’re/are indicative of actual wave size.

C. Wind was westerly that day (as it normally is in west end of Erie) and we were exiting the harbor on the east side of the island which put us into the lee of the island until we exited out of it.

Which was starting to happen at end of video.
